Leonard Hired in Duluth

Longtime Calgary first baseman Dan Leonard has been hired as the new hitting coach for the Duluth Dragons. Leonard is replacing Hector Cano who has been promoted to manage the team. “Love Machine” spend 17 of his 18 BBA seasons in Calgary and he recently retired after spending the last two years overseas.

“We are glad to welcome Dan home,” GM Kevin Dickson said. “We had a job waiting for him last year, but he decided to play one more. In Duluth Dan will get to coach with some of his old teammates.”

Cano and Leonard played together for many years. Perry Eccles has been promoted from Quebec to take over the pitching duties after the retirement of Jason Jacome. All 3 played on Calgary’s last Landis winner in 2021, Leonard was the MVP of that series. He was an all star 4 times and won a Zimmer at first base.

Leonard ranks 4th on Calgary’s list for all time hits, games and at bats. He is the team’s leader in singles and triples. Leonard finished his career with 2817 hits, just short of the coveted 3000, but still good enough for 23rd in BBA history. The only players ahead of him that aren’t in the Hall of Fame are Mario Soriano and Dusty Rhodes. Both are likely to be voted in. He ranks 12th in league history in triples and 17th in singles.
