Trail Droppings 2039-7 SP Injury Update

SP Injury Update

The Pioneers suffered three major injuries to starting pitchers this year that ended their seasons. At least one will stretch into next season. All three of the pitchers were expected to be on the team’s protected list for the expansion draft at the end of the season. Their injuries could make the team reconsider that.

Cristobal Hernandez has been the ace of Calgary’s staff since he started in 2029. He tore his UCL in his second start this season and is expected to be out until June of next year. His 140 wins are second in team history and his is midway through his 6 year $127 million extension. He will turn 33 in October and will make $22 million next season unless he exercises his opt out after this one.

The first factor to look at is how the injury has impacted him. So far the only hit has been 1 point of movement, with his stuff, control and velocity all holding steady. Of course he isn’t even half way through his recovery. Part of the decision will be impacted by timing. Management isn’t sure if the draft will take place before or after the opt out period. Obviously if he opts out the protection list decision is mute. At this point it is probably 50/50 that the team leaves him unprotected. At his age and contract it is doubtful that he would be selected, but he would be a boost to the gate of an expansion team. The fans would not be happy if the team exposed him, but it may be worth taking the chance.

Carlos Granados was expected to make it to Calgary this year. Instead he has been on the DL since September of 2038 after making 1 start for AAA St. Paul. Granados tore his rotator cuff and was expected to be out 5-6 months. The injury took him from being the #23 prospect in the BBA to #30. In January he suffered a setback requiring surgery and is now expected to be out an additional 15 months so he might be ready to play in April. It also bumped him down to the #59 prospect.

When he got hurt his potential was 6/7/9. Like Hernandez he has only lost 1 point of movement, but that probably bumps him back a spot or two in the rotation. At 22 he has a lot of upside, but it is also a devastating injury for a young pitcher. He will have to spend part of next season rehabbing in the minors, but could still see Calgary sometime next year. The team still plans on protecting him and is hoping there are no more setbacks.

Jorge Alfaro is the newest member of this injury squad with is season coming to an end in August with shoulder inflammation. The estimate is 4-5 months on the DL which means he should be ready for Spring Training. Alfaro was the team’s #1 pick in 2037 so they will need to use a spot on their protected list to keep him.

The good news is that he didn’t need surgery. His ratings stayed steady except for a 1 point drop in movement potential. However, he improved his actual to 8 so if that holds he will be fine. Alfaro was pitching at A ball and wasn’t anywhere near to being ready for the majors. He may need 2 additional full seasons in the minors now due to his delayed development.

The Hernandez decision will be interesting. I'm hoping we put out a expansion draft schedule here shortly. :)
