Calgary Retires 2 Numbers

As promised yesterday, Calgary owner Charles Radbourn had one more surprise up his sleeve. The Calgary Pioneers announced that they are forever retiring the numbers #26 and #39. Number 26 belongs to great first baseman Bombo Vadabonceur who played in Calgary from 1976-1987 and number 39 belongs to the great outfielder Hector Cano who played his entire career in Calgary from 2014-2032.

“There are so many great players that have played for this team, it was really tough for us to narrow it down to only 2,” Radbourn said. “We intend for this honor to be even rarer than induction into our Hall of Fame, but I am sure these 2 won’t be the last”

Cano of course was just inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame and Vadabonceur is a founding member, inducted in 2022. It is certain that Johnnie Iraq and Terry CochranTerry Cochran were other names that were discussed and it is only a matter of time before they see their numbers displayed on the outfield wall. The team intends to display Cano’s number on the left field wall and Vadabonceur’s on the right field wall, closest to where they played the game.

Vadabonceur was one of the legends of the early years of the BBA, back when it was called the MBWBA and it had far fewer teams. One of the greatest hitters in league history, he won the coveted Sawyer Silk Award 5 times, including 4 consecutive seasons from 1977-1980. He was named to 10 All Star games and inducted into the BBA Hall of Fame in 1996. His career stat line, with all his teams, reads .318 BA, ,880 OPS, 2683 hits, 319 HR, 1420 RBIs. He played his last 4 1/2 seasons with the Madison Wolves.

Cano was one of the most fierce sluggers that ever played in the BBA. His 643 home runs are 4th all time. A 7 time All Star, 5 time Puckett awardee and the winner of the Sawyer Silk in 2018, Cano was elected to the BBA Hall of Fame in 2035. He led Calgary to it’s only Landis Championships in 2018 and 2021. Cano hit over 40 homers 7 times, including 4 seasons in a row. His best home run year was in 2025 when he hit 55 and drove in 131 runs. His career stat line reads .281 BA, .872 OPS, 2663 hits, 643 HR, 1753 RBIs.
