After laying dormant for several years, the Calgary Pioneers announced today that Hector Cano is being inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. The team also said that Cano would not be the only inductee this year. Few players are as associated with a team as Cano is. This honor is long overdue for one of greatest sluggers in BBA history.
“There is no better player to induct at the reopening of the hall than Hector Cano,” Calgary owner Charles Radbourn said. “He is the greatest player in the history of this franchise and this is just one of the honors we have planned for him”
Cano was a first year inductee to the BBA Hall of Fame in 2035. His 643 home runs rank fourth in league history behind Bopper Kengos, Morris Pennebaker and Charles Puckett. Cano was the Sawyer Silk Award winner in 2021, the year he led Calgary to it’s second Landis Championship. He was also on the 2018 champion team. A 7 time All Star, he won 5 Silver Slugger Awards and even one Zimmer. Truly one of the greats of the game.
“This is really an honor to join the team Hall of Fame. I gave everything I had on the field and the fans of Calgary gave me even more back. I just hope I can help bring them another championship,” Cano said.
Cano was drafted in the 1st round in 2014 and made it up to Calgary that September. He was a starter the next season and with the club for all of his 19 seasons. When he retired, he led the team in most major offensive categories, although he has been passed by Tony Franco in a few.
