Calgary Interviewing Coaches?

Several former Calgary Pioneers were spotted at the facility recently generating rumors that staffing changes may be in the future. Several former pitchers and one very popular former first baseman were seen. Recent statements from management about displeasure with the team’s pitching prowess this year also fueled the rumors.

The first alum spotted was Fox Mulder, former Calgary flamethrower who topped 200 K’s five years in a row for the club. Mulder, 104-103 for his career in Calgary, is high on the team leaderboards in several categories. With Calgary’s increased interest in power pitchers having a former player like Mulder coaching in the system could be a perk for the team. At the very least the team should be considering having him help out at Spring Training.

Ace Young, who has been working with the team as a scout, was also seen coming and going. While not unusual, Young was in the running for a coaching spot just a few years ago when the team went with another former player. The Pioneers have to be thinking that if they do not give Young a shot, another team will hire the legendary screwballer.

The third former hurler generated maybe the biggest buzz, because he hasn’t been spotted in Calgary since he left after the 2035 season. Esteban Ortiz is the team’s all time leader in games pitched, with 875, before finishing his career out with Huntsville. At the time, Ortiz was upset that the team let him walk in free agency, convinced that he still had more years in the tank. Unfortunately he only pitched 5 more BBA games the next year before hanging it up. It is almost certain that Ortiz was in town to talk about a job.

There could be several pitching coach positions available in the Calgary system next year. With the team considering firing Calgary’s current pitching coach and their AA coach pondering his future at the age of 67, more than one former player may be coming back. Calgary in recent years has almost exclusively hired former Pioneers/Marauders to fill out their minor league coaching staffs.

The other face seen around Calgary is recent alum Dan Leonard, who played with the team last year. Leonard has spent this season in the UMEBA minor leagues, a far cry from his All Star days in Calgary. Leonard was hoping to resurrect his career and get another shop to get his 3000th hit, but it looks like his quest will end stuck with 2817. The team has already informed SA Havana’s hitting coach Peter Power that the team would not be extending his contract. That could open the door for Leonard.

Of course this could just be 4 former players coming back to visit their home of their glory years and all this talk could go up in smoke. Do you really believe that?
