Spring Training - Francisco Medina

One of the big questions the Calgary Pioneers had going into Spring Training is whether Francisco Medina would be ready to take his place in right field. Medina, the 22 year old lefty, was an international free agent signing in 2032. He has developed into a big time power prospect since then.

Medina was rated 5/6/6 potential when he signed for $320 K in January 2032. It looked like he was going to be a bust when he dropped to 5/5/4 at the end of 2033 and was only back to 5/6/5 the next year. He got his first minor league at bats in short season and winter ball 2035 and bumped to 6/8/6. Last year, he spent most of the year at AA and bumped to 8/10/6. It was at this point the team started to seriously look at whether he could be ready to replace Santiago Sanchez in right field. Sanchez platoons against RHP while Medina has the potential to play full time.

The test would be this Spring. Medina played in about half the games as the team was trying to get a look at several other players as well. He hit .263 with a.791 OPS and only 1 HR. However he did blast out 5 doubles in 14 games. Good enough to start the year in Calgary? The team is leaning toward sending him down to St. Paul for a little more seasoning, but chances are good that he will see the grass in Calgary this Summer. Of course if the team makes a deal for Sanchez he could come up sooner.

I like them better when they are mine. I keep hoping someday it will be my turn.
