Trail Droppings 2037-2 Rule 5 Roulette

Rule 5 Roulette

Time will tell who got the better of the Rule 5 Draft, but the Pioneers lost 5 players and picked up 3. The team expected to lose some pitching and was not surprised by who was taken. Four of the first 13 players drafted were from the Pioneers, a testament to the strength of their farm system. The team went into the draft looking for another catcher, but came away with 3 pitchers. Lets look at the players involved.

Drafted

1st Round - Assi Leabua (from Omaha) - This hard throwing righty has the potential to be a setup man if he can get his curveball in shape. He throws a 100 mph fastball and maybe ready to take the leap from AA to the BBA. In a rather weak Rule 5 Draft the Pioneers strategy was to go after several arms and hope to keep one. Leabua will get a serious look in Spring Training.

2nd Round - Leon Seyh (from Jacksonville) - The lefty is someone the Pioneers have had on their radar for awhile. He is more developed than Leabua and may have a better chance to stick. If he pitches well Curro Madrid may be looking for a job.

3rd Round - Felipe Rosado (from California) - The Pioneers picked him up last year on waivers and grabbed him back after California signed him to a minor league deal. Still recovering from an injury, Rosado got stashed on the DL giving the team some time before they have to make a decision on him.

Lost

1st Round - Carlos Guzman (to Louisville) - There were 2 pitchers that the Pioneers wanted to protect, but they also wanted to leave a couple of spots open for draftees. With a couple of AAA pitchers likely to be in the team’s rotation that aren’t on the 40 man, the team would have been in a position of probably waiving Guzman if they had protected him. This way they have a better chance of getting him back if he doesn’t stick in Louisville. The guy has almost gotten a couple of shots in Calgary, but been blocked. It will be interesting to see if he sticks in Louisville.

1st Round - Javier Taveras (to Wichita) - Signed by the team as some outfield defensive depth, Taveras got claimed by his old GM (The Genius) and then promptly got returned. It may have been an opportunity for the two to catch up or it could be that Wichita just planted a spy in Calgary’s system.

1st Round - Jorge Ferringo (to Phoenix) - Here is the other guy the team almost protected and the one it really didn’t want to lose. In retrospect we blew it and we sure hope that Phoenix doesn’t have a spot for him.

1st Round - Bernardino Bertoletti (to New Orleans) - A depth signing this off season that would have been pitching at AAA. Would have liked to keep him, but wont miss what we never had.

2nd Round - Jeremy Evans (to New Orleans) - Evans is a case of a team getting their guy back. New Orleans let him go, Calgary signed him and then New Orleans drafted him back. Didn’t help that he was the topic of discussion as a poor man’s Chang, but like Bertoletti he never got to unpack his bags.

I wanted to resign evans, but he wanted like 3M in arbitration, so i declined. Glad to get him back at league minimum. That said, anyone who views him as a poor man's Chang....feel free to reach out with a trade offer that reflects that view :)
