Disappointing Season Finally Ends

“This has been the worst season since I have been here, said GM Kevin Dickson who took over the position in the middle of the 2004 season. “We lost 98 that year and the next, but we were building from scratch. This team was built to compete and then the wheels fell off in April and we never got it turned around. I’m surprised I still have a job.”

The Pioneers finished the year 68-94, 28 games behind Seattle. Last season the team was 91-72 and made it to the Cartwright Cup round of the playoffs. Fortunately the team avoided the shame of a 100 loss season, something that Calgary has never done.

Most of the clubs problems this year were on the pitching side. The only reliable starter was Cristobal Hernandez and the rotation ranked 13th in the FL. The bullpen wasn’t much better, ranked 12th, and the team will probably be looking for a new closer. Jason Morris finished 7-10, 5.35 with 28 saves, while blowing 8 saves. The team expects more for a $6.5 million contract hit.

The bats were adequate this year, but not outstanding. The team finished 2nd in the FL with a .275 batting average and Juan Karyabwite took the FL batting crown. Karyabwite and Rupert Grant both finished with more than 100 RBIs and Jose Rios finished just short with 99. However the team finished 12th in home runs, ridiculous for a Calgary team.

Grant slumped most of the year, his RBI total was more due to the players hitting ahead of him. Mario Soriano slumped, then missed half the season with injury. Tony Franco was a mess at shortstop and hat the worst season of his career. The team did have a couple of bright spots with rookies Susumu Nakanishi and Hector Serrano, but not enough to make up for the pathetic pitching staff.

“Let’s just say that it is a good thing that we have the number one ranked farm system.” Dickson said.

Extremely weird season. I can't imagine Calgary not bouncing back.
