Jimenez to Manage Havana

Jorge Jimenez, long time Calgary pitcher, will take over the reins of the team’s short season club in Havana. Jimenez, who retired after the 2034 season, was a starting pitcher for 11 seasons in Calgary. He pitched on both of the team’s Landis winners on his way to accumulating a 125-85 record for the Pioneers.

“Glad to be able to be back with the team,” Jimenez said. “I’m going to like coaching in Havana, it is close to home and a lot warmer than Calgary! I just have to hop over one island.” Jimenez was born in the Dominican Republic and still makes his home there.

He broke in with the team in 2017 with a brief September call up. In his first full season, he was 19-7, won the Gillstrom Award and helped lead his team to the Landis Trophy. Twice an all star, he also won a Zimmer as the best fielding pitcher in the Frick League. He wa in the rotation when Calgary won the Landis again in 2021.

“Adding Jorge is part of our program of keeping it in the family,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “Um I guess I better rephrase that or a couple of the other GMs might misunderstand. I mean keeping it in the baseball family, we like to bring back “guys who know the way we do it in Calgary.”

Hall of Famer Hector Cano was the manager at Havana the past 3 seasons, but he moved up to AA Duluth to take over as the team’s hitting coach.
