Carl Long to Manage Chestermere

The Calgary Pioneers announced that former starting shortstop Carl Long will be the new manager of the team’s Rookie League team in Chestermere. Long played 8 seasons with the club and was a member of both the 2018 and 2021 Landis winners. Known as a defensive whiz he was a starter for 2 seasons. However, he will always be most famous in Calgary for his grand slam extra inning home run in game 2 of the 2018 Landis to win the game.

“I am really looking forward to getting back into the game full time,” Long said. “It’s been 10 years since I played in the BBA.” Long played 4 seasons at AAA St. Paul after his BBA career ended.

More recently Long has been part of a group of former Calgary players that the team has hired to scout players throughout the world. In addition to Long, the team has sent pitchers Jorge Jimenez, Ace Young and Fox Mulder along with slugger Bernardo Perez scouring for untapped talent. The team is also looking at these players for future coaching openings.

“We have had really good luck with identifying international talent in the past year and these guys deserve all the credit,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “We like to have former Calgary players involved in our organization and these guys have done a tremendous job this year.

For those too young to remember Long’s 2018 heroics, here is how it was reported at the time.

Game 2 matched up Fox Mulder for Calgary against 21 game winner Enea Ginori. Both teams put a run on the board in the early innings. In the 7th slugger Juan Garcia gave Halifax a 2-1 lead with a home run. Chase Stoll (not a slugger) responded with his own four bagger in the top of the 8th to tie the game up 2-2. In the top of the 9th inning the Marauders had a runner reach 3B but Cesar Rodriguez struck out pinch hitter Dave Miller to get out of the jam. Silas Thompson came in for Calgary and set the Hawks down in order in the 9th to put the game into extra innings.
The Hawks brought in Javier Alomar with 1 out in the 10th to pitch. The first batter up, Chase Stoll singled, followed by a double from Jonathan Archer. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and FL HR King Hector Cano at the plate Alomar intentionally walked him to load the bases and face Carl Long. Long was only in the game because he pinch ran for Terry Cochran in the 9th. Long batted .175 during the season with a slugging average of .190. He was primarily used for his defense and the team seriously considered not keeping him on the playoff roster.
So in the 10th inning, with the game tied 2-2 and the based loaded, Long walked to the plate. Without argument the worst hitter on the Marauders team. He swung all 190 lbs of him at the first pitch and drove the ball to right center field. To the crowds amazement the ball kept rising. Abrams moved back toward the fence, leaped and came down with an empty glove as the ball cleared easily. Carl Long's Grand Slam had just blasted open the game 6-2. The homer was Long's only hit during the playoffs. Thompson came in and put the Hawks down in order to earn the save.
This game will go down as one of the greatest in Calgary history and Carl Long, the unlikeliest of heroes just earned a place in the hearts of every Marauder fan. Long's bat will be prominently displayed when the Calgary HOF opens.

Long was a rookie in 2018. He was the 27th guy on the roster. He was only in the game because he was a pinch runner for current Calgary manager Terry Cochran and was only at bat because of an intentional walk to HOFer Hector Cano. In his BBA career Long hit 15 homers, 1 in every 138 plate appearances and has a .298 slugging average.

Chase Stoll, the batter that tied up the game, was only a starter for 3 of his 11 BBA seasons. He had 44 homers in his career or 1 in every 91 plate appearances.
