Calgary All Star Candidates

The Calgary Pioneers are having one of their best offensive years on record, on pace to score 937 runs, which would be a team record. So it should come as no surprise that several players are candidates to make this year’s Frick League All Star Team. Lets take a look.

Locks - If these guys aren’t on the team then a crime will have been committed. These three all have a real shot at not just making the team, but being named as starters.

DH - Rupert Grant - All he is doing is leading the entire BBA in with 34 HRs and 92 RBIs. He is also hitting .283 with a 6.83 slugging average. He is tops in the Frick with 215 Total Bases and leads all batters with 117 strikeouts. Grant is having the best year of his career and making the Pioneers grateful they signed him to his lucrative extension. This will be Grant’s 4th All Star selection.

CF - Mario Soriano - This guy never slows down. At 35 years old he is 3rd in the Frick with his .344 batting average and 5th with a.406 OBA. He is #1 with 4.4 WAR, 2nd with 122 hits, 1st with 76 runs, 2nd with 52 stolen bases. That’s not among center fielders, that is among all hitters in the Frick. He is also among the top 2 in most defensive categories for center fielders. This would be Soriano’s 6th All Star selection.

LF - Juan Karyabwite - Calgary’s left fielder is leading the Frick with a .366 batting average, 138 hits and is 4th with 72 RBIs. His 3.9 WAR is 3rd in the league, he is 2nd with 28 doubles, 4th with 200 TB and 5th with 40 steals. He is also one of the top fielder at his position. In his 4th season, he led the league in average and won the Gillstrom his rookie year and has 2 Zimmers, but has never been an All Star. That should change this year.

Players that should get some consideration for the All Star Game (For the Bench)

C - Antonio Robles - He is putting up some impressive power numbers this year. His 19 HR and 52 RBIs are second only to Cisco Arreola (who should be a unanimous selection). There are many other good candidates in the Frick, so Robles is a longshot.

2B - Jose Rios - The youngster is having a tremendous sophomore season. He is 2nd with 18 HR, 2nd with 56 runs and 4th with 52 RBIs among FL second basemen. He is 3rd in OPS and SLG. He most likely won’t make the team because two of the best second basemen in the game are also in the Frick.

3B - Tony Franco - We are really hoping that Franco gets a serious look for a bench spot. He might not have too many more chances. The 35 yr old is leading FL third basemen with 18 HR, 2nd with .508 SLG, 3rd with 43 runs and 22 doubles. He is also tops with 159 total bases. He has only been named to 2 All Star teams despite his 6 Zimmer Awards. He has a chance to break 400 HR and 2500 Hits this season.

SP - Cristobal Hernandez - Hernandez is only 6-5, due to pathetic run support when he is pitching. He does however sport a 3.36 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 2 shutouts. However this is a great year for FL starting pitchers so even I wouldn’t add him to the team if I was the GM. Hernandez has been an All Star twice.

RP - Juan Onelas - The rookie reliever is 6-1, 3.30 ERA, 1.12 WHIP. He is tied for 2nd in wins among relievers.

RP - Jesus Arce - The setup man is 3-2, 2.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP averaging 10.1 K’s per 9 innings pitched. Arce has been named to 1 All Star team.

I definitely voted for the first 3, didn't really consider the rest. Robles probably would have gotten a look in the Johnson, but no chance against arreola.

I meant that the rest could be considered for bench spots, not voted in. Wasn't clear, fixed original. Yeah only the top 3 deserved votes to start, the others maybe a couple make the bench. However, there is definitely not a lack of talent in the Frick this year. Going to be some really good players that don't make it.
