Trail Droppings 2035-4 Pioneers Trade Balderas

Pioneers Trade Balderas

In a surprising move the Calgary Pioneers have traded star right fielder Mario Balderas to the Brooklyn Robins for a package of prospects. Balderas, the 2032 Sawyer Silk winner, has been the Pioneers starting right fielder for the past 7 seasons and has been the team’s cleanup hitter during most of that time. Balderas hit .292, with 38 homer runs and 134 RBIs last season. He has been one of the most productive hitters in the Frick during his career.

“It came as a surprise, but I heard I might get shopped,” Balderas said. “I am going to miss Calgary, but I am very excited to come to Brooklyn. They are a team that likes power hitters and have been very aggressive this off season. It is going to be fun to play with Cisco this year.”

Balderas has only failed to drive in over 100 runs once in his career and holds the Calgary all time record with 160 in 2032, when he also hit 51 home runs. He won 3 Silver Sluggers, 1 Zimmer and was an all star twice.

In return for Balderas the Pioneers received 3 prospects, starting pitcher Dusan Kukcenjac, 1B/DH Henry Jones III and infielder Kagehisa Echi. All are considered solid prospects that should be able to contribute in Calgary this year or next.

Kukcenjac is a powerful right hander from Bulgaria that keeps the ball down, which is important in Calgary. He spent most of last season at A ball but will start this season out at AAA St. Paul where the team expects him to work on his curveball and his control. He did get invited to Spring Training and will make some starts during the early weeks, but it is more for the experience than anything else. The team does not expect him to be ready this year.

Jones has been on the team’s radar for a long time and is being looked at as a replacement for Rupert Grant down the road. A right handed power hitter, Jones is also expected to hit for a high average. His major weakness is the inability to find a position in the field that he can handle. He has played a little first base (badly) and the team will give him a chance to play left field, but it is expected his future will be at DH. He also got a Spring invite and will probably go down partway through Spring Training. Jones is the grandson of the great Henry Jones, HOF third baseman and one of only six BBA players to hit more than 600 home runs.

Echi is the only one of the three with a real chance at making the club this year, although he will be a long shot. With the starting shortstop job still up in the air and with the loser being slotted for a bench infielder spot, Echi is in the running. The left handed Japanese native has a major league glove. The question is whether he has the bat to stick.

Calgary manager Terry Cochran said this of the deal, “I knew there were going to be some changes this year, I didn’t expect to lose both Mario and Dan Leonard, but we have the youngsters to fill there spots. What will be tougher to replace is the baseball knowledge and leadership those guys brought to the team.”

That was a great trade for you. Might hurt for a year or two as those prospects fill out but none look like total busts and in 2 years Balderas might be a shell of himself.

Hope so. Hated to trade him, but wasn't going to pay him what he wanted for an extension. I think I have the bats to replace him and I did get a good haul.

im not sure its that great from Brooklyns side. If he doesn't extend Balderas its a fail and if the pressure to extend Balderas leads to an awful long term deal its also a fail. Balderas has to become the piece that leads to a playoff push this season for this to make sense to me.

I agree with this. You know I was doing an assessment/preview recently of my team and feel like it's playoff caliber. Then I looked around at the other teams in the Johnson and I'm probably still not better then Charm City/Rockville/Montreal/Jacksonville/Louisville/Vegas. And maybe not better then New Orleans/Phoenix/Huntsville. Not to mention my finances got totally f'd this winter. For some reason I haven't had any fan interest bump for the 4 Extremely Popular or 3 Very Popular players I acquired and season ticket sales have bottomed out. If I can field a winning team, it will all be a moot point. But If I struggle I'll either need to dump salaries or write 500 team news to bail out.

For Calgary it should be a great deal. A small step back in order to lunge forward. I was high on all the guys I gave up. Just had a log jam of prospects at those positions and a bushel of prospects becoming rule 5 eligible in the next few years.

I love this deal, basically because it allowed me to get Rectenburg.

I gotta say, I thought Brooklyn got the better of this deal by far. Balderas is only 32 and hasn't shown any decline just yet - as long as his contract demands aren't unreasonable I'd be perfectly happy to extend him for another 3-4 years. On the other side, I'm not enamored with anything Calgary got. A back of the rotation RHP SP with -splits against *both* sides, a RH DH with a skillset that should be readily available on the FA market if you really wanted it and an interesting SS that can probably start and pull in 1 WAR or so if pressed.

Part of it was that I wasn't planning on extending Balderas and I had Santiago Sanchez to replace him. Surprised you are so down on Jones, he is very similar to Cochran on your team. I know they are righties, you'd like them a lot more if they weren't, so let me know when you decided to give up on Cochran, I will gladly take him off your hands. :D Same thing with Oh, I agree that he will never bump is fielding  so you might as well get rid of him. Of course I think both of them have Calgary genes.

I'm not in love with Cochrane, no, but it's disingenuous to compare his potential to Jones'. He has +1 CON, +2 GAP, +2 POW and +1 EYE over him - that's pretty big. As I've told you in the past, if you want to make an offer for him then by all means.
