Eccles Hired As Coach

The Calgary Pioneers announced today that they have hired Perry Eccles to coach the team’s Short A club in Havana. Eccles will serve as the team’s pitching coach. The Hall of Famer helped lead Calgary to 2 Landis titles during his 8 seasons there.

“I contacted the team because I heard they might be hiring and I’m glad we were able to find a good fit,” Eccles said. “If I couldn’t come back to work for Calgary, I would have contacted Vegas. I had some good years there too.”

Eccles was inducted into the Hall in 2031, in a Calgary uniform. He finished with a 217-160 record, 108 of those wins coming in Calgary. He won the Landis in 2018 and 2021 with Calgary and then won another in 2024 with California as a reliever.

Eccles will be reunited with former teammate and future Hall of Famer Hector Cano who manages the Havana Cigars. Steve Thomas is moving from Havana to Quebec to take over as the team’s pitching coach in A ball. The team is also moving pitching coach Silas Thompson from Quebec to AAA St. Paul. Both Thomas and Thompson are also members of Calgary’s Landis winning teams.

“I’m a big believer of hiring back our former players, especially those from our great championship clubs,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “You need to develop a winning culture in your minor league system and we want our younger players to learn it the Calgary Way. Perry bring that tradition with him.”
