Desjardins Promoted to Calgary

The Pioneers announced today that St. Paul pitching coach Ralph Desjardins has been promoted to Calgary to take over the coaching duties from departed Manuel Mariscal. Desjardins has been a long time minor league coach in the Calgary system, starting with the team in 2018. The 60 year old was wondering if he would ever get his shot at the big leagues.

“I was hoping when I heard the rumors about Manny that I would get the call. I look forward to working with Terry and the rest of the coaching staff in Calgary,” Desjardins said. “I think the timing is right too since it looks like several of the guys I have been coaching at St. Paul are ready to move up to the majors this year.”

Desjardins started with Calgary’s A League team in Quebec back in 2018. He did double duty coaching the team’s winter league club for his first few seasons. In 2022 he made the jump to AAA St. Paul and has been there ever since. He brings a winning tradition with him as St. Paul has made the playoffs the last 8 seasons in a row including 2 championships.

Desjardins played in the BBA for 8 seasons, mostly in the Hawaii bullpen. While he pitched in 322 games he finished with an undistinguished 15-18-7 record and a 5.27 ERA. He retired when Al Hoot took over the Hawaii team as Desjardins said he would rather retire than play for “that degenerate SOB.”

The opening occurred because long time Calgary pitching coach Manual Mariscal refused to sign an extension with the club. The team’s all time win leader was never clear on what his issue was. The team offered him an extension, they offered him a minor league managing position, but he was never clear what he wanted to stay. He will certainly sign on with another club and maybe will get his chance to manage in the BBA.

The team was evaluating what to do with the pitching coach opening in St. Paul. It is very likely that several members in the organization will be promoted a level with the team hiring in a new coach at one of the lower levels. The team is not anticipating any other major coaching moves.

He’s in the available pool because he refused to sign. My guess is he wants a BBA manager or bench job.
