Trail Droppings 2033-5 Hernandez Signs Extension

Hernandez Signs Extension

Calgary ace Cristobal Hernandez agreed to a 3 year extension worth $24.7 million. The team had been negotiating with Hernandez all season and the lack of an extension had given rise to trade rumors of late. Locking him up to an extension probably means that Hernandez will be staying in Calgary.

“We are glad to get this done,” said GM Kevin Dickson. “If we had gone into the off season without an extension there is a good chance that Cristobal would have been heading elsewhere. Now that we have locked him up and with Rupert Grant staying put, it looks like we won’t be blowing things up after all.”

The Pioneers were talking about putting several of the star players up on the block as negotiations had broken down with Hernandez. Rumor has it that he was asking for over $11 million for a 1 year extension which would have made him a free agent after next season. By locking him up for 3 seasons, at a reasonable price, the team may try to add a piece or two and make another run at the playoffs this year. Grant had an opt out option in his contract that he chose to let expire, meaning the team’s biggest slugger will be here for up to 3 more years on his current deal.

The team also decided to execute options on Dan Leonard, Estaban Ortiz and Omar Aparicio. Milburn Pennybags will become a free agent after the team voided the $4.5 option they had on him.

“Estaban and Ortiz were no brainers, Dan was the one that we had to think about,” said Dickson. “Don’t get me wrong, we love him, but his contract was a pretty big number and he had an off year last season. In the end it came down to how could we let him walk, he is just too much a part of this team and still a key part of our offense.”

Hernandez is quietly one of the best pitchers in the league. Doesn't get enough notice.

The long-ball has kept him from being elite. Just more HRA than you'd expect from someone with 10 stuff and 8 movement. His HR/9 has been similar to Tonche's for the most part, and that isn't what you'd expect looking at the ratings and Jacksonville's park. The only season he allowed fewer than 21 HR, was by far his top season. If he ever gets that under control, he'll be a Nebraska contender.
