Calgary Herald Sports-Wrap - 1998 Volume 3
The Marauders had another strong stretch, going 7-2 over their last 9 games to pull into a second place tie with Las Vegas. More surprising is that they did this with a couple of strong pieces going down to injury, but the deep bench paid dividends.
Sadaharu Oh, Jr. went down for four weeks with an oblique strain, but back-up Patrick Casavant stepped in and picked up where Oh left off, hitting .345 with 3 homeruns over the 9 games.
Catcher Gustavo Maldanado, who is hitting .349 for the season and having a fine defensive campaign, went down for two weeks with a knee contusion. Pimp Avatar was able to step in and hit .417 over those 9 games.
"We obviously don't expect these guys to continue this production the rest of the season, but one of the things that will make us tough down the stretch is our depth." Commented GM Johnson in a press conference following last night's game.
Also worth mentioning is the big league debut of Pitcher Lorenzo Morales, Calgary's top pitching prospect. Lorenzo pitched 8 strong innings in his debut, giving up two runs while stiking out 7 and walking only 1. "I didn't feel like I had total command of my pitches," Morales commented after the start. "I wasn't happy giving up 8 hits, but my defense was spectacular behind me and bailed me out of some tough situations. I was also able to get some key strikeouts when I needed them, but I will have to be better in my next start."

That Morales looks a monster!
I would, however, caution against bringing him up too early, lest the same fate befall him, as a bevy of Phoenix pitchers, full of unrealized potential.
Mike Rebhan, Andy Nebraska, etc...there's more, but I'm too disheartened to link to them at this point...

Yeah, I'm just jealous that I didn't deal Bodeen for the same package. Not THAT jealous, however. That was a massive, massive haul.

Yeah, I used the scout's recommendation that he may be ready but I will monitor him closely!felipe wrote:That Morales looks a monster!

Yeah, it was an unbelievable haul. Some of these guys have had their talent bump, but still a great trade for the last GM.aaronweiner wrote:Yeah, I'm just jealous that I didn't deal Bodeen for the same package. Not THAT jealous, however. That was a massive, massive haul.

Matt, I'm not sure if this is a correct use or not. I turn this over to Mr. Russell for a ruling.recte44 wrote:That's what she said?aaronweiner wrote:Yeah, I'm just jealous that I didn't deal Bodeen for the same package. Not THAT jealous, however. That was a massive, massive haul.
