2050-5 Pierce Over the Hill?

Pierce Over the Hill?

Pioneers star pitcher Jefferson Pierce had the worst season of his career in 2050. Pierce went 7-12 with a 5.48 ERA. Out of 33 starts, only 9 counted as quality starts. All of these marks are career lows and come right after Pierce signed a 5 year, $48 million extension.

“I’m not worried about Jeff,” Calgary pitching coach Silas Thompson said. “Let’s take in to account, that the team only averaged 2.9 runs per start when he was on the mound. It is hard to win when you don’t get the support.”

Pierce’s run support was actually better than the 2.3 runs he got last season when he was still able to post a winning record. At 34 years old, the team has to be asking itself if he needs to move down the rotation or even into the bullpen. For the first time since the team traded for him in 2035, the team shopped him before the trade deadline. Will he be on the market again and will anybody take a chance on an aging pitcher with a $10 million contract?

Now if someone wants to get upset about run support it should be Eric Whitehead, whose poor performance got him relegated to the bullpen late in the year. With a 7-15 record and a huge 6.60 ERA, it isn’t a surprise that he lost his role in the rotation. However, it has to be disappointing when you only team only averages 2.4 runs per start.
