GM Jim Roberts is going for broke. Literally.
The Crawdads today announced 4 signings for a total cost to the franchise of over $100M.
First, OF Jamie Angwin - who at 32 years old has never been to an All Star Game - signed the richest FA deal yet. 6 years, 83M. Although to be fair, its essentially a 4 year 60M deal as those last 2 years are team options. New Orleans got mesmirzed by the 6.3 WAR last season, a number that is likely an anomaly. Still - new orleans needed some help in the OF and a big bat, and Angwin is a 30-30 guy who checks all the boxes they were looking for.
Next, 2B Thomas Jefferson signed a 4 year 17M deal, which again is probably closer to a 2 year 8M deal with the team options at the end. Jefferson immediatly helps cement the middle IF which is in desperate need of some help.
And then 2 IFAs - $7M for SP Alberto Gonzalez and his 8/9/8 ratings and 5 pitches with a 9/8/8/8/7 potential - if he can develop he should be a very solid top of the rotation starter.
And $5M for CF Pepe Villalobos - although the Nicoraguan is probably better suited for a corner OF position. He has speed and power, but definitely needs to sure up his defense to get to where he needs to be.
