Crawdad Chronicles 52.01 - Breaking up the band

Big changes coming to New Orleans next year.

One year removed from a landis championship, the 2043 version of the new orleans crawdads will look significantly different than that champtionship team.

For starters, aging starters are hitting free agency with little hope of coming back - unless the free agency market dries up. 35 year old SP Zac Johnson, who went 13-11 this year with a 4.4 WAR is likely to be gone. SP Christian Garcia is only 32 and a year removed from a Nebraska Award, but his $14M/year salary, injury concerns, and his 2052 performance all might be indicators he is on his way out.

31 year old OF Sebastian Fradesco, finishes up his 5 year 47M deal. And although the club would welcome him back, his WAR dropped from 3.1 in 2051 to in 2052 - and rumor is he wants a similar deal to his last one. Crawdads will balk at that.

CL Lacerda and MR Rodriguez, both on their 2nd stint with the crawdads are unlikely to be back. Rodriguez is 32, but his agent seems to indicate he will test the free agent market. Lacerda is one the team would surely like to bring back. afterall he has led the league in saves 2 years running. But its hard to expect the 35 year old to keep plugging along at 70+ games/year,

IF Sid Turcotte and Kertu are different stories. Both are in their late 20s/early 30s, so are still in their prime. Keretu has never really panned out, and just isnt worth the 5M/year he eared last year. Turcotte should be a priority with his amazing defense and OBP - exactly what you want an infielder, but he is reportedly asking for 7 years/70M. New Orleans will pass with those numbers.

So with all those changes, assuming Garcia stays on the team, New Orleans will be a key player in free agency with about 20M to spend. Drop Garcia and the number inreases to 34M. But thats a lot of juice to lose.

Will be a different look and feel around the big easy in 2053.
