Crawdad Chronicles 42.04 Disapointment again in '42

2042 was a better season for New Orleans than 2041. The injury bug didnt have quite as much of a sting. Some promising youngsters (Nevarez https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 42848.html and Fernandez) arrived on the scene. But they were unable to capture the division title - finishing 5 games back of Brookyln, and were wiped out in 4 games to fellow wild card contender Boise. Lets look at what went right.

SP Garcia https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 37799.html - The kid has arrived. Going 17-4 with a 1.06 WHIP and 7.0 WAR he is a legit (although probably not leading) contender for the JL Nebraska award.

1B Fernandez https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 40753.html - Arrived late in the season, but shows he belongs. in 34 games, he hit .254/.373/.602 with 11 HRs and 35 RBI. If he can keep that pace going for a full season, watch out BBA. Oh, he also had a +7 WAR at 1B.

CL Lacerda https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 43620.html - led the league in saves for the 3rd consecutive year. Made his first all star game. Strong candidate for reliever of the year

What didnt go so well

SP Jim Armstrong https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 6666.html- returned from a devestaing torn rotator cuff and struggled until the clock turned to August. His control started to lump. The one prised pitching prospect didnt have a great year. New Orleans hopes a full healthy offseasoon is what it will take to get him back on track.

The Lights Went Out - New Orleans is usually built for power. They are always near the top of the BBA in Home Runs. Not this year. With the departure of Yancy Cravat https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 31138.html, and the late arrival of Fernandez, they hit just 184 HRs, good enough for 12th in the JL. It should be noted cravat had a pretty miserable year in looserville.

The Outfield - Justin Jackson https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 36472.html really struggled early in his first year in New Orleans. He hit jut .162 in the month of April, didnt break the .200 average mark until the end of May. he finished with a .254/.331/.448 slash line, 24 HRs and a 0.5 WAR. Not exactly what New Orleans had in mind when they signed him to a 4 year 98M contract last offseason - one in which most BBA experts panned as overpaying. The real sin, is that despite Jacksons underperformance, he probably had the best numbers of any OF on the team. RF Donestavez https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 43014.html was the odds on favorite for ROY before going down with a Torn Labrum himself. He made it back for the postseason run in September - but didnt really help the team get over the hump. 2040 ROY CF Xavier Rangel https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 40970.html bounced back from a poor 2041 season and led the league in 3B. He has earth shattering speed, a +7 WAR in CF, but only an average bat. That causes quie the connundrum for new Orleans going forward.

IF Gillstrom https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 24319.html - Still has it. Great bat. 38 HRs. .284/.361/.523 slash line. Why is he in the "not so well" camp? Its because New Orleans had to move him over to 3B so that he could contribute on Defense. That wasnt the plan when they signed him this offseason. This delegated 2 time all star and 2039 Pucket award winner Barerra https://statspl.us/brewster/reports/new ... 22967.html to DH...a position often occupied by one of the catchers. Chaos in the lineup was created by Gillstrom not being able to hold down his usual 2B position.
