Crawdad Chronicles 36.05 - New Orleans faces tough off season decisions

Post by JimBob2232 » Sat Nov 17, 2018 4:55 pm

New Orleans, having just announced that Manager Hernandez will not be back next season, are starting to look forward to making some moves this offseason.

First up is Catcher Hsin Mei, who is entering the last year of his deal in New Orleans. The club will have to decide whether to make him one of the highest paid players in the league, or if they want to move him for some prospects. If the club decides they have enough peices and can build around him, look for him to stay. But also dont be surprised if he is moved if the right deal comes along.

Then there is CL Luis Ortega. A solid closer with 85 saves over the last 2 years. But he is looking for a big payday. Like Mei, the club would like to keep him, but it is unlikely they can afford both. Might be worth parting with him now while he still has significant value.

SP Andres George is in the same boat, entering the last year of his deal, with a decent payday on the horizon.

Similar story with SP Sam Romero. He came over in from San Fernando in the Freddy Delgado deal. He is 32, has a moderate salary, and has a player opt out after next season. The club would likely be looking to move him if they could find a willing partner.

2B Alex Ramirez is another candidate to be moved. He isnt cheap, at 5.8M the next 2 years, but clearly he isnt in their long term plans.

1B Luke Pratt is probably on the outs as well, entering teh last year of his deal.

The club will likely decline the option on 2B Claudio Chavez, freeing up about 3M in salary for 2037.

So if the team moves some significant peices above, look for things to get real interesting. If they are in full rebuild mode, does it make sense to have players like 28 year old Hector Amaral, kicking around? Woudl they really move 1B Yancy Cravat? Stay tuned.

Whatever happens, this offseason should be interesting in the Big Easy.
