Crawdad Chronicles 36.04 - Whitaker not what was expected

Post by JimBob2232 » Sat Nov 17, 2018 7:47 am

MR Joe Whitaker (http://montybrewster.net/BBA/HTML/news/ ... 28953.html) is an interesting story. Originally the kid from Cumberland, MD was an 11th round pick by the Brooklyn Robins in 2026. He failed to sign that year, went undrafted the next year, and then New Orleans took a flyer on him. He spent most of his career as a starter, but in 2034, New Orleans turned him into a reliever using a specialty clause allowed only in the MBBA. His ratings skyrocketed, but his performance has not improved.

Now with 71 innings pitched in the BBA, he is 8-11 with a 5.70 ERA and a BABIP at an astonishing .408.

GM Jim Roberts said "we've been expecting good things from Joe for a number of years. They guy can throw 100 MPH, has one of the best changeups in the game, but he just seems to get the short end of the stick every time out".

His movement could be a little better. He allows a few to many Home Runs and walks. But New Orleans hopes that 2037 will be the year he finally turns it around. If not, it could be the 27 year olds last year in the Big Easy.

His BABIP against is oddly high. Just luck?

Yeah, 60-70 innings isn't really that much so sort out noise, and for the 39 innings this year his FIP was pretty encouraging. I'll trade you a bag of magic beans for him right now though if you're so frustrated that you want to give up.

He's an example of why I generally don't pay a lot of attention to ERA for a reliever if I can manage to stomach it...
