Crawdad Chronicles 34.02 - Alfonso Keeps Chugging Along

Gabriel Alfonso. Not a name that probably rings a bell around most front offices in the BBA, but around New Orleans, he has been an invaluable player for the better part of a decade. And this year he might just be the BBA comeback player of the year.

GM Jim Roberts recalls picking him up as a 13 year old kid in 2016. "He was still in High School at the time!" We saw some potential in him, but nobody else did. Alfonso went undrafted in the 2016 draft. But when the call came for him to join the Crawdads Short A ball, he jumped at the opportunity.

It wasnt easy, but over the next 10 years, he slowly marched his way up through the New Orleans minor league system, being successful every step of the way. In 2025, due on some injuries to the Crawdads staff, he made his debut in New Orleans, going 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA. Enough to thorougly impress GM Jim Roberts "That season was pretty special for him, really showed that he had what it took to be successful in this league". Despite the early success, New Orleans decided he needed more grooming, and couldnt really make a permanent home for him in the Big Easy, so they sent him back down to AAA for the 2026 season and most of the 2027 season. He posted 19 wins in 2026 in Havana, and then in 2027 he started to bloom. Pitching 3.27 ERA in 2027, then 1.73 ERA in his first 13 starts in 2028, and he was ready for the big time.

And was he ever. From 2028-2031 he was one of the most dominant pitchers in New Orleans. In those 3.5 years he had 55 wins, and a 3.65 ERA. He was rewarded with a 5 year 42M contract extension. Then the floor fell out.

He went down for 4 months with Forearm inflammation. Then he lost 12 months with a Ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. Then, most recently in 2034, he had his season interrupted with a strained oblique.

However, despite pitching only 23 games since the end of the 2031 season, he has been on fire this year. Going 7-0 with a 2.93 ERA in just 8 starts. The only start he hasnt gotten a win in is the one where he strained his oblique and had to go on the DL for 5 weeks. New Orlenas will be relying on his dominance continuing if they wish to fend off a strong field of candidates for Johnson League playoff spots.

Quite a career for an un-hearlded 13 year old kid from Lake Jackson, Texas.

Well...when you are in high school at age 10. It’s funny to even see that on his stat sheet.

Yeah, something got messed up there, but it makes for a riveting story.
