Kernel of Truth 65.01—So, another year, another what?

Post by JRamirez » Tue Nov 04, 2025 11:06 am

The fiscal year has moved from 63-64 to 64-65. Yawn. But we need something to write about for this first team news. Owner Walter Wilhelm, God bless him, is ecstatic, and that means JR's job is safe for another season. Des Moines' Class AAA El Paso hitting coach decided to quit, well good for him; an offer's already out for a new one.

According to Jibwa Smortningaling, team accountant and head groundskeeper, the DMO lost $10mm over the 2063-64 fiscal year. The club, which doesn't expect any postseason revenue come next fall, has an expected 2065 season player payroll of $93.5mm, plus or minus the actual cost of arbitration for Ken'ichi Okubo. The "Kannami Tsunami" was second on the team in plate appearances in the season just closed, with 655 (second to Waffy Bishr); still that was 18 short of the 63 season. Okubo has a 3.1 WAR, tops on the team, or maybe catcher Terry Pitzer just edged him out.

Pitzer finished with a fielding efficiency of 1.028 behind the plate, mid-range among catchers with 110-plus starts. His 2.8 ZR was fourth. His RTO% was fifth, at 26.9%. He can also play a decent third base, and first base, and he played some left field in college, so he offers the team flexibility. The DMO already has two or three youngsters who can field the hot corner, including Santiago "10-Arm" Quintanilla, who hit .340 with eight cuadrangulares (homers) in 200 at-bats. This team news draws to an end here.
