The Kernels will start spring training with just three relievers in designated roles and let the rest of the innings fall who they may.

Scott Everard (6/7/8) starts the spring as stopper. Surely the mean and maniacal dice rollers in the BBA heavens will have a lil mercy on Eveready this year. He was signed to a three-year deal, and Des Moines is determined that the 33-year-older return to his 2060 form.

The young dynamic duo of Everett Sutphin, 23, and Max MacNair, 24, are scheduled to get extended set-up and middle relief innings. Sutphin posted a 2.69 ERA in 50 innings last season. BABIP: .288. MacNair, the Bear, went last year from Double-A to Triple-A to Des Moines (4.12 ERA in 11 games).

Sutphin's claim-to-fame is imitating Rocky and Bullwinkle in the pen to keep the guys loose (as a moose?) out there, while MacNair dries his hair with a bear rug. And, yes it's artificial.

13 other pitchers (including everyone on the expected '62 starting staff) are also assigned to the pen for the opening days of Spring Training. Their roles are none specified.
