Following the success of the season-ending WILL LEE WEEKEND, the Des Moines Kernels are underway today, 10/15/61, and tomorrow with the new jamboree and restroom cleanup IOWA80 WEEKEND, at Iowa80, still the world's largest truck stop, off of I-80 near Walcott. Inspired by the habit of Japanese fans who clean the stadiums of their pro sports teams after games, DM owner Walter Wilhelm has instituted IOWA80 WEEKEND where the players draw lots for various assignments throughout the 440-acre facility. The Weekend was planned so as to not interfere with the Truckers Jamboree in mid-July.

Players drew lots for their assignments, and some of the highlights are below.

Iowa80 Kitchen
Kevin Hough (3b, SA)
Pedro Martinez (RP, AA)
Aldo Gambetta (LF, IC)
Greg Shaw (SP, waivers)
Enrique Rodriguez (C, AA)
Lorenzo Vargas (2b, SA)

Shift leader Speedy Shaw has reported that he's been spending more times signing autographs than bussing tables. The 35-year older is still on waivers, his home-away-from-home the last weeks.

Barber Shop
Gabriel Bentall (SP, AAA)
Bob Chastain (Of, AAA)
Vern Tibbits (P, AA)
Curt Beaman (P, SA)

Bentall's father was a barber and Wales, and a successful one, despite the fact that no one could understand his Welsh, nor that of his son, Gabe. "Most of the time Tad would fling a dart at a poster of hairstyles and practice with the neighborhood sheep, which roam the fields of Wales." Kinda like that guy with scissors for hands. Then again, not like that.

Laundry Center
Brick Pollitt (RP, DM)
Alejandro Portelles (1b, RL)
Hirokazu Shimata (Rf, AAA)
Albert Lopes (Lf, SA)
Giles Bakogianni (P, AA)
Dave Roney (C, A)

Pollitt said the last time bricks went with a laundry facility was when Kramer tried to sabotage a washing machine by filling it with dry cement. "I'll try to avoid that, and hey despite my name I don't throw many bricks to the plate." Pollitt is signed through '62 for $2.5mm.
