Des Moines did 'er best to salvage the season series versus the so-called Sluggers of Louisville and did so in style, showing that the Kernels Piping Hot Popcorn > Colonel Sanders as DMK's "B-team" swept LOU in Kentucky by an aggregate run count of 37-12, setting the September stage for a possible winning record with a sweep versus the Springs in the '61 season-ender.

Starters Ken Haworth and Mike Young collected wins, and mystery man Dileep Mirchandani (1.64 in 4 GS) also had a good start. Alonso Amaya and awesome rookie Everett Sutphin also collected wins. Two other rookies, Max Macnair and Vernon Trenholm, recorded saves.

Hitting-wise, Hitoshi Kitamura (3b), yes, another rookie, was 8 for 16 with four doubles, two homers, and seven rbis; the guy who came over for Goat McCoy raised his batting average 67 points from .186 to .253. Dennis Armitage and Masakado Matsunaga also had seven rbis. Kevin Thistle batted .400 in the series, and first baseman Carlos Rodriguez hit .357 with six rbis. He also hit his ninth home run of the season (.882 OPS).

Last, Felix Parreno slugged his 400th career home run in a Des Moines uniform. He also stole a base, which leaves him one behind his personal season best of 46, which he captured for PHX in '59.

Des Moines has won seven straight and welcomes the Nine of Yellow Springs for the season series finale. Des Moines runs differential is now +59.

Hence the reason Run Differential can be so wonky.

It's the culprit but beating bad teams by wide margins is an indicator of a good team.

That's the general idea, but an indicator is not a certainty.

There is also the fact that almost everyone beats very bad teams by greater differentials.
