2058.4 Iowa Ionizer - Roberto's Rise

Post by joshd19 » Mon Feb 26, 2024 3:05 pm

The Kernels started the season with Bane McCoy at 1B. McCoy was a heralded prospect: the 5th overall pick out of high school in 2052, the native Rhode Islander jumped straight to the BBA last year from a half-season stint at his hometown AA team. To the disappointment of Iowan fans who had waited five war-torn years for the debut of the phenom with the elite eye for the strike zone, Bane strained his MCL on his very first major league walk while performing his controversial "silly walk" celebration and sat the rest of the season (running up his service clock in the process.)

In his first sustained look at BBA pitching in 2058, McCoy looked overmatched and barely cracked a .600 OPS. Fan sentiment supported the front office's decision to give him time to marinate in El Paso at the AAA level he previously skipped over. Within a few games in El Paso, McCoy strained his intercostal when he tried to moonwalk during a routine tag play and collided with 2B Tom Harris. Suffice it to say that nobody in Iowa is particularly rooting for Bane McCoy right now.

And all of the affection drained from McCoy has been transferred directly to his successor, 2057 30th overall pick and #43 league prospect Ricardo Norman, who made his own leapfrog from AA to the BBA last month and has shined at 1B ever since. Slashing .323/.378/.552 over 74 PAs and with stellar fielding metrics thanks to his superior range, Norman looks like the 1B Iowans want and deserve. With additional upside yet to be realized, the 22-year old projects to be crushing it in Des Moines for years to come.
