The Des Moines Kernels franchise is waiting on pins and needles as they await the decision of legendary SP Alaric Wullenweber on his contract this upcoming offseason. Wullenweber has an opt-out and is scheduled to make $24m each of the next 3 seasons. Additionally he can basically go year to year with his contract at this point as the 2054 and 2055 seasons are both player options. At 32 this is a golden opportunity for Wullenweber to control the late stages of his prime years.
When asked for comment, GM Randy Weigand ducked the question by saying "we respect the contract that the previous regime handed Alaric, and are prepared for any eventuality". Some observers noted the acquisition of SP Scott Davis at the trade deadline as a potential hedge against Wullenweber leaving, and Weigand tacitly acknowledged that thinking by saying "as i said before, we are prepared for any eventuality and moves have been made with that in mind".
