The Cool Of The Grass 2050.21: Des Moines Draft Recap

Post by aaronweiner » Thu Apr 07, 2022 3:00 pm

Des Moines Kernels GM Aaron Weiner drafted deep into the 2050 BBA draft, going ten rounds deep before letting his assistant GM, Justin Martin, take over for him. Before he stopped, the legendary talent evaluator managed to get quite a few players worth noting. Here's a list of Des Moines' first ten rounds.

Round 1 (3 overall) 1B Carlos Souza: Souza was the #3 pick in the draft and easily the best college hitter to come out this year. A switch-hitting, powerhitting first baseman with a great batting eye, Souza could make an impact as early as next season. He's doing fine at Portsmouth (high A).

Round 2 (44 overall) SP Mal Knapp: Knapp is a bit of a big swing by Weiner, an expensive gamble ceiling pick who already has excellent command of his stuff as a high school player and could improve with good coaching as he's still only 16 years old. He's done well in Rookie League.

Round 3 (80 overall) RP Lewis Norman: Norman is a major league ready reliever who the team also sent right to Portsmouth. He could be up as soon as September.

Round 4 (112 overall) RP Ernest Clement: Right now, Clement is just a soft-tossing 17 year old righty, but scouts are intrigued by his potential. Fragile and already injured, but worth watching.

Round 5 (144 overall) RP Dillon Montgomery: Montgomery isn't quite 17 yet, and so the team is hoping that he gains velocity as he ages. He might be a major league reliever if he does.

Round 6 (176 overall) C Tom Bailey: Bailey is a ready-to-go 20 year old who will help at first with the organization's catching depth but could be a backup catcher to someone at some point. Decent arm.

Round 7 (208 overall) RP Dave Lachance: Lachance has a big arm for a 16 year old righty, and while he doesn't appear to be a major league prospect at this point the team is hoping he improves with age.

Rounds 8-10, IFs Glen Simmons and Earl Crousse, and OF William Melton: Three defense-first players who might not have a prayer, but who were all better than players around them in the organization.

Overall, management felt the team improved through the draft.

I think that you had one of the better drafts in the league Aaron. Des Moines is going to be in the playoffs by 2053.
