The Des Moines Kernels have seen better days this year. Since starting the year 15-10, they have crumbled to a 17-33 record (.340) over the past couple months, putting them all the way into the cellar. It appears they seem solidly out of contention for the rest of this season. But if you ask them, they're victims of bad luck.
"I know it's silly to say this since we're in Des Moines and expectations are usually low, but we've lost all the close ones this year," said Kernels manager Ricardo Alomar. "If you gave us back a few of the close ones we're right back in the wild card race."
Alomar has a point: Des Moines is 7-14 in one run games and ten and a half games back in the wild card race. If they were 14-7 in one run games they'd be three games back, and 39-34 on the season. Instead they've fallen to a 32-43 record, and have shipped out former #1 overall prospect Jamie Barber to division rival Twin Cities for their new #2 starter, Thomas Turner.
"We're thrilled to have Thomas Turner join our staff," said Des Moines GM Aaron Weiner. "He's been a tremendously successful starter and we're happy to have him, even if it cost us Jamie Barber, whom we feel is a fine young man who we just couldn't coach the right way."
Turner joins a pitching staff which has improved dramatically in 2050 and now benefits from the addition of Turner to the staff. Turner carries a career 56-38 record and a 3.77 ERA, mostly in the Johnson League for Charlotte. The deal also cost the team starting catcher Andy Elmer, though for now, Francisco Flores has been serving as a highly capable starter as well. Elmer had played well in 27 games this season and could ultimately serve to be the bigger loss than Barber.
"You have to give something to get something," said Weiner. "Thomas is an extremely capable young man and we're excited to have him as one of the centerpieces of our pitching staff."
The Turner move probably marks the end of any sort of serious upgrades for the Kernels during this season, but in the offseason there's a good chance that they will be able to make some moves. Francisco Salgado appears poised to decline his player option. The team may not re-sign reliever Daniel Camacho. In addition to some other, minor moves, the team should have another $10 million in cap space to maneuver next offseason and could upgrade in several places.
"We can see the team forming here," said Weiner. "We've done a lot of moves, a lot of shifting, a lot of tinkering. There's still plenty more to do, and we're going to do everything we can to bring the fans of Des Moines the playoff team that they deserve."

The Heartland is going to be crazy next season.
-Kwak, Medrano, Bourges all pending FA in LOU
-Hubbard likely leaving a big hole in CF in NASH
-YS9 seems lost
-Des Moines fleshing out a solid roster
-TC will be calling up some prospects and only has about $25 mil guaranteed contracts.
Madison would have to be the way too early favorite as they look to be bringing back pretty much the same team. But the rest of the division looks like it's going to bunch up even more then it already has.

It's a changing landscape for sure. I have no idea what I'll be doing in CF, but it won't be the $38.8M per year for six years that Hubbard wants lol.ae37jr wrote: ↑Mon Apr 04, 2022 11:36 amThe Heartland is going to be crazy next season.
