He Who Walks Behind The Rows. Vol 5 Ep. 2

Pitching Woes

That faint feeling of optimism that was in the air and brought out Des Moinians in increasing numbers to Edward Murphy Memorial Stadium has now been replaced with a strong feeling of “Hey, what’s on Netflix”

Pitching was certainly not one of the Kernels areas of strength, but there were hints of potential there, a strong emphasis should be put on “hints”. All of that is gone now, with a rash of injuries running through the pitching staff faster than the Coronavirus at a swinger’s party.

It started in the offseason with the loss of Anthony DeYoung. The once promising starting pitcher now faces a future of where relief seems more likely. DeYoung was a curious case when he came over in the Don Smith trade. He seemed destined to make it to the BBA and have a noticeable impact, but his development stalled and a quirk with his minors time, meant he needed to go on the 40-man sooner than would have been liked to protect him from Rule V vultures. This meant that by 2046, he was out of options and was shoehorned onto the active roster. The timing of this couldn’t have been worse because he was coming off of elbow surgery after pitching nearly 200 innings between AA and AAA in 2045. 2046 has been rough on the Queenslander and its likely he’ll just want to spend the rest of the season on smoko.

Next to go down was Reliever Pedro Tanon. The 25-year old from El Salvador has been a stalwart in the bullpen for the Kernels every season he has played and his loss to elbow surgery has been acutely felt in Iowa.

The Kernels shrugged off these offseason losses and just got on with it, but getting on with it didn’t last and just as DeYoung came back Starter Greg Palmerwent down. Absolutely no one was surprised by this development.

Of greater shock, was the loss of Closer Bill Keil. Keil was having a great start to the season (on top of being the Frick League Pitcher of the month in September 2045), holding a 1.69 ERA but was cut down by a torn Labrum. This injury probably effects the Kernels the most because the bullpen depth was already paper-thin in the organization (especially with Tanon out).

The only thing the Kernels organization hopes now is that some Iowans still enjoy a ballgame, beer and hotdog, because its hard to see how the product on the field will be entertaining.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
