Timmy 'Donger' Karnes finally looks to be finally growing into his other well-endowed gift…his pitching.
When the Kernels traded away Don Smith to build the batting lineup up, the hope was that Donger Karnes would grow into the Ace of the staff and be the anchor the club needed to finally get back to the playoffs. In 2045, Karnes continued to decrease his ERA and FIP and brought his WAR up to 2.76.
His peak in the season came on June 13, 2045 against Nashville where Donger pitched 8 innings of 1-hit, 0 run baseball. (Not to be outdone, the Kernels bullpen did their utmost to try and blow Karnes gem for him in the ninth.) His stinker came on May 10th when he was chased back to the clubhouse after giving up 7 ER in the first three innings by the Madison Wolves.
After the June 13th gem, Karnes had a rough July but really came into his own in August and September. However, all is not what it seems. While his ERA decreased from 4.38 to 3.75 from August to September, his FIP remained roughly constant at 4.2. While this is still good, it suggests he got away with a little luck and grit from his fielders.
Nevertheless, this is a good news story and Karnes still has upside, especially if he develops his changeup into All Star level.
