Kernels Sign Their Draft Picks

The Des Moines Kernels atrocious 2044 season had one silver lining, the second overall pick in the 2045 draft. The Kernels continued there front office philosophy of picking the best player available and selected Jamie Barber from Texas. 18-year old Barber has a lot of potential and a four-pitch repertoire that includes a 99 mph fastball paired with a nasty change-up. Hopefully, control won’t hold him back in the future. Barber was rumoured to be strongly considering heading to college and spurning Des Moines offer, but when $8 million was put on the table, he decided that four years of Rocks for Jocks and Scopes for Dopes just didn’t make sense.

Next up, the Kernels used their second round pick to grab Reliever Marc Consolo. Consolo projects to be one of those one and done reliever types likely in the stopper role with his fastball-changeup combo. If he can pick up a third pitch, he might find some more versatility out of the pen. The Kernels were surprised when Consolo said yes at the $1.5 million they offered, expecting a high counter offer, but that wasn’t to be with Consolo cleary eager to get to work.

After picking two pitchers, the Kernels went all in on outfield prospects picking and signing Antonio Lopez,Hisanobu Takahashi, Tyson Barber and Dave Gracia. None of these guys are likely to make an All Star team but it’s a nice crop of outfield depth. Each player signed immediately and all of a sudden, an already good farm system has gotten a whole lot better.

Without future funds to pay for expensive and long contract extensions, the Kernels worked with the cash they had and made a strong push to ensure that the organization would continue to have a bright future.
 They say it don't be like it is, but it do!
