He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Two Sad Vets

Lizardo and Dalrymple Allowed to Walk

GM Geoff Webb is faced with a tough task. How to turn a last place finishing team into a contender at some point. This task is made tougher by a payroll that does not reflect the W-L record. Coming in at a healthy $97 million in 2043 has left the Corn Junkies with little to no room to maneuver in 2044. In addition, the farm system is looking thin and there’s little help to be expected from this direction.

With this context in mind, Webb had to decide on two team options this week and the answers were pretty obvious.

First up, is RP Roberto Lizardo. The 29-year old Puerto Rican was picked up off waivers from Valencia in June with hope that he could recapture some of his better form from his younger days or at the very least shore up a dismal bullpen. In the end, he got the job done, pitching 66 innings and contributing a passable 109 FIP-. But a $2,700,000 salary that was set to increase to above $3 million and a GO% that is on steady decline meant that his time with the Kernels was done. This will no doubt come as a bit of relief to Roberto since he spent the last half of the season pissed off at being in Des Moines. Lizardo will likely find some success in UMEBA or even more likely, the Pacific Division.

Second on the Team Option list, was popular CF Mitch Dalrymple. Dalrymple was also slated for a salary increase above his already above-market $7,000,000 salary. Webb was more tempted to execute this option, just to keep a BBA-ready fourth OF on the roster, but in the end his WRC+ never sniffed 100 and his SO rate is on the rise. This coupled with the fact that he was barely passable on defense meant that he was a luxury Webb could not afford. The popular CF is likely to find more work in BBA before moving on, but he’ll have to alter his salary expectations.

The downside to declining these two options is that the Kernels do not have obvious candidates to fill these roles and anybody coming in from inside the organization is more likely to make the team worse. This does free up some cash to bring in some FA’s but it won’t be the big splash types that were supposed to improve the Kernels season.
 They say it don't be like it is, but it do!

man Dalrymple crashed and burned hard. There was a stretch there in the beginning when I was constantly comparing him to my guy in LLuis Maldonado. While Luis is starting his own downward spiral recently, he is still miles better than his counterpart over the course of his career.

I was never quite as on the Dalrymple train as the other guys--I mean, he was pretty good, but I didn't see him as a true superstar. When Kocherschmeltz put in his brain chip, his defense dropped and everything else got more angsty. Very good player, but not a figurehead kind of guy.
