Kernels were glad to shut the door on July, as they had a rough month playing poorly 9 - 18. August was much better going 13 – 14. Bad news was third baseman, Gerardo Guzmán, will miss the rest of the season with a strained hamstring. His offence production will be missed. In 127 games, Gerardo has 23 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, leads the team with 62 stolen bases, and a OBP .384. A trade between Des Moines and Hawaii was made, as the Kernels have sent 33-year old third baseman, Don Draper, to the Tropics in exchange for 18-year-old minor league, left fielder, Ryan Newman.
Pitcher of the Month:
Duane Coutts started 5 games, earned 3 wins in 35.2 innings pitched. Duane shut down the Valencia Stars on August 16 pitching a complete game 1 hit shutout, with 1 walk and 4 strike outs on 105 pitches.
Batter of the Month
Second baseman, Alan Williamson, is still making an impact at the plate going 25 for 91 with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, scoring 18 runs, 17 walks, and striking out 21 times with a triple slash of .275/.426/.495
