KT 62.62 - Two retired pilots from 132nd Wing of ANG to be honored at this evening's game

09/11/62

Retired pilots Major Kevin "Hawk" Daniels and Captain Rachel "Viper" Morgan will be honored in an opening ceremony this evening, as Des Moines remembers with pride these two airmen, well one man and one woman, who participated 61 years ago in Operation Noble Eagle, protecting the Iowa skies. Daniels is a Cedar Rapids native and lifetime fan of the Kernels; he also coached his son's little league team. Morgan majored in aerospace engineering before joining the USAF. She's a Des Moines native with two sons and five grandchildren. Daniels also saw service in Iraq and Afghanistan, while Morgan became a specialist in disaster response coordination. The Opening Ceremony will also include a flyover by elements of the 132 wing.

After that, Des Moines and Tommy Akers (the expected starter) will take the field in Game 2 of the series against the visiting River Monsters. TWC has won 93 this season, and Des Moines 87, as both teams are the front runners in the FL wildcard race. The Kernels will be without 1b Alonso Flinn and 2b Thrillseeker Martinez. The Monsters feature 22-y.o. Raúl 'Scooter' Gallehos, overwhelming favorite to win this season's FL Rookie-of-the-Year Award. Gallehos, .329 against the league, has hit .257 against the Kernels.
Des Moines Kernels, 2059 to present.
