The Cool Of The Grass 2051.9: One Heinous Streak Likely To Fall, But Playoffs Unlikely
The Des Moines Kernels have been so bad, for so long, that even a glimmer of hope is something. Des Moines' last winning season came in 2031, when Cisco Arreola and William Moreland were the one-two punch in the lineup. The last time they finished ten games above .500? All the way back in the 2014 season, when Des Moines' playoff drought was just a elementary six years old. Yet, right now, Des Moines is exactly ten games above .500 with likely too much ground to catch up to the wild card, which is possibly their most successful season in almost four decades.
"It's disappointing that we're so far back in the wild card race considering we're on pace to win 87 games, but that's the Frick League," said Des Moines manager Ricardo Alomar. "Still, if anyone else besides those four great teams there has a chance, it has to be us."
That isn't to say it's going to be a cakewalk down the stretch for Des Moines. The Kernels have the eighth toughest schedule in the league in September, with seventeen of their last 28 games against Sacramento, Nashville, Louisville, and Yellow Springs.
"We're going to have to deal with that every single year though," said outfielder Hasheem Makin. "The last month is always all Heartland, all the time, so good time to start dealing with that now."
While there's currently a 97% chance that Des Moines finishes above .500, it's very possible it won't be all that far above .500; simulations make the Kernels' most likely ending record around 85 wins. Still, 85 wins for this franchise would be a milestone for sure.
"How big a deal would that be?" asked DH Pedro Guzman, rhetorically. "I mean, to turn the team around 20 games this year and 30 since I got here would be such a big deal."
Des Moines is currently 72-62, 5th in the wild card race and five games back of Valencia and Sacramento. They do get Sacramento this sim for a four-game set, and while Sacramento is a very talented team a big sim against them could go a long way towards actually contending for a playoff spot. They'll have to do it without star second baseman Felix Parreno, who was placed on the DL this week with a mild arm injury.
"Oh sure, we want this one bad," said starting pitcher Thomas Turner. "This is why we play the games."

Hopefully we'll get a move-by-move synopsis (with author commentary) on how this team was put together.

I’m rooting for Des Moines; right now I like them much more than I like my own team.

You get this when and if I make the playoffs. Right now you're the one standing in the way of this. I'd tank if I were you.
