Bandit Post: End of Season 1996

Post by aaronweiner » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:21 pm

Things couldn't have gone better for the Bandits this year - unless they had won a playoff series, that is. Birmingham made the playoffs for the first time in team history and contributions were made by some very likely sources and also some more surprising sources. Birmingham did lose in the first round of the playoffs, but for a team that was only asked to gather a winning record, their results were quite happy indeed. If every year is like the 1996 season, Birmingham fans will be storming the park in droves.

Team Awards

Hitter of the Year

Brett Favre, 37 HR, 127 RBI

Favre nearly led the Frick League in RBI, finishing second with 127 on the season. Favre led a balanced attack in which every Birmingham starter had at least a league average OPS and more than doubled his HR and RBI output from a year ago.

Pitcher of the Year

Damian Bedgood, 17-6, 3.30 ERA

We're hopefully not naming this the Damian Bedgood Cautionary Tale Memorial Award, because Bedgood managed to unluck his way into Tommy John surgery. However: Bedgood has shown no signs of deterioration yet and he was definitely the Bandits' most consistent pitcher last year.

Rookie of the Year

Doogie Howser, MD, .866 OPS in 52 AB

Howser was a huge godsend for the team down the stretch, starting against lefthanders in center field and playing crackerjack defense. Howser might supplant John Wright as the full-time starter in center field next year.

Newcomer of the Year

Jack Dark, .313 average, 20 HR

Dark was an offseason acquisition by Birmingham and was re-signed for three years after the season due to his outstanding play. He'll be the starter at shortstop this year, but depending on health, he may be the starter at 3B or 1B, where he plays Yogi Zimmer-caliber defense.

Surprise of the Year

Tie: James Randolph, 2.40 ERA in relief, Abdal Tutmosa, 3.18 ERA between rotation and relief

Randolph was sent to AAA because of total ineffectiveness and a terrible track record; the righty hadn't posted an ERA below 5.0 since 1992. Instead, Randolph ended the year as one of the most valuable relievers in all the MBBA and will likely be the closer next year. "King Tut," on the other hand, was signed midseason as an emergency reliever but ended the year as the team's fifth starter down the stretch, posting a career-best 3.18 ERA and a starter's ERA of 3.09 last year. Tutmosa was re-signed for the next three years and may find his way back into the rotation.

I heard Favre was thinking about retirement.
