It’s the time of year where strategy and game planning reigns supreme and hope springs eternal. However, for a few Outlaws, their time in San Anton has likely come to an end. The Outlaw major league roster has 3 players that are on the last year of their contract and all are relief pitchers, which we all know that San Antonio likes to swap out every offseason. The 3 players who will likely not be back in an outlaw uniform in ’62 are as follows.
P Hughie Dunstone
Dunstone came over in the Kawano trade as a way to balance out the salaries and help the Bears stay under the league cap. He was on the last year of a 2 year, $7.5M deal he signed with Sacramento and the Outlaws saw him as a possible pawn out of the pen. While he hadn’t notched a positive WAR since ’58 Hughie did have some possible upside. He was injured when he came over and by the time he got going it was late in the season. In limited duty he had a 2.25 ERA and notched one loss in 12 games. He gets an incomplete grade and while he may have value as a lefty reliever he will likely be allowed to test the free agent market. The GBC may be the likely landing spot unless someone is enamored with his past performance.
P Chung Chan
Chan is interesting in that he was offered a $1.3M 1 year ‘prove it’ deal during last offseason. The Outlaw front office saw enough possible potential in the then 35 year old reliever that they brought him in and offered him a slot in the pen. Only after the inked the deal did the GM realize that Chung seemed ultra familiar. Doh, the team signed him to a 1 year, $1.5M ‘prove it’ deal in ’59 when Chan notched a 4.38 ERA with a ton of long balls given up. This current version of Chan did happen to appear in 54 games for the Outlaws and didn’t embarrass himself. He also didn’t earn an extension and will be on the free agent treadmill again this offseason. Who knows, maybe the Outlaws will kick the tires on him again in ’63.
P Felix Camarco
The last pending free agent on the team is a bit different. While the 32 year old veteran reliever was also brought in on a 1 year prove it deal for the paltry sum of $1.1 million, Camarco actually brought a ton of value. He notched 1.1 WAR and appeared in 84 games for the Outlaws, pitching a staggering 126.2 innings and going 7-2 with 11 saves. For $1.1M the team seemed to have gotten enough to keep the reliever around for another year. However, Camarco thinks he can get more money on the open market and wants to test the waters. He has a career ERA+ of 107 and has been substantially higher than that most years so he will likely get a job on a big league club somewhere. Who knows, maybe he’ll be back in an Outlaw uniform. In ’65.

Camarco looks decent. Typical Mexican work ethic, though.
