On the Lam, 58.5 - Rookie Recap

Post by trmmilwwi » Wed Apr 10, 2024 7:30 am

The Outlaws had a few rookies that logged a decent amount of time with the big league club this season. Some were expected to contribute on an ongoing basis and then there were others that earned some playing time due to injuries or because their play kept them up for an extended look. At any rate, here are the rookies and how they fared.

C Paul Hovis – Hovis was certainly a surprise player this year. He was slated to cover the rest days and occasional platoon for the expected starter Blast McBearett but as the year wore on Hovis started to steal atbats more and more. The lefty catcher finished with a .291/17/47 stat line and was at least average behind the plate. He may not have been a true rookie (35 games last season) but we’ll leave him on the list.

3B Jack Acheson – Nutball came over in the bin Husam deal with Twin Cities last year and was placed into the infield rotation at 3B. As injuries hit throughout the year he earned more and more playing time and finished with a respectable WAR of 0.4 in what turned out to be a half season of sorts. He played in 87 games but was able to get 264 atbats, much more than originally expected. He slashed .303/0/22 with 30 runs. He was decent in the field and should get a good look at the starting nod for 2059.

LF Shoin Yoshida – Yoshida is a future star and has been brought up through the low minors system at a slow pace to help him fill out his talent. He started the year in AAA Austin and while he had a slow start to the year he played quite well in late summer and early fall. Due to some injuries on the big league club and to test what the 24 year old has he was called up in late July to get some big league atbats. He hit his first BBA homer in his first week and carried a .300 average into his second week. He slashed .213/1/7 in 94 atbats in August but finished the season very strong with a .241/8/17 September. Overall he finished with .233/10/27 on the year and looks to have the left field slot wrapped up for next season.
