The Outlaw Chronicles 2046-5 Outlaws Re-signs Rice

Outlaws Resign Rice

During the 2045 season, the Outlaws saw considerable struggles from their Center Field position. Mennac Shakes, who has taken the majority of starts in Center for the last five years had his worst season yet, a season that saw him end with a .223 BA and measly .278 OBP. Backup CF Rodger Gonzalescoming off a very successful 2044 was absolutely atrocious in 2045. Hell, the Outlaws even tried CF Abdeljilill Sediki for some games which was nothing more than a desperate cry for help.

With the season already lost, GM Calvaruso, with an eye to the future, worked out a late trade with Calgary for CF Todd Rice. The 26 yr old represented a major offensive upgrade for the position and has been a steady defensive player during his career. If the brief showing for Rice was any indication, .323 BA, 2HR and 8 RBI in 65 AB's, the move should prove to be a smart low key addition.

But before anyone could fill out the lineup card with Rice's name on it, some contract negotiation's had to occur. GM Calvaruso tried to get Rice's agent to sign an extension before the end of the season, but he repeatedly rebuffed those offers to give his client a chance to taste Free Agency for the first time in his career. The Outlaws stayed in constant contact with Rice and let him know just how much he was valued as a member of the San Antonio ball club. After a few weeks of sniffing around the league, Rice ultimately resigned with the Outlaws for a 5 yr, $72m contract with a team option coming in year 4 and a player option in year 5.

"We are delighted to have Todd back in the fold and feel this will truly lock down Center Field for us for the next few years" GM Calvaruso stated at the press conference announcing the signing. "This will be the end of our heavy lifting this offseason and while we will still keep our eyes out for some solid additions, it's all up to Mgr Fookes and the new coaches to make this work".
