The Outlaw Chronicles 2036-9 Outlaws Draft-A-Palooza

Outlaws Have Busy Draft

GM Calvaruso and his scouting department were extremely busy for this years draft with 9 picks in the first three rounds. With the draft seemingly top heavy, the scouting department worked diligently to uncover and identify the prospects that San Antonio liked the most. Here is a breakdown of the 2045 draftees;

Rd 1 - Pick 35 = SS William James Westwood - One of the top rated players left on the board and at a position of need, the Outlaws were ecstatic to see Westwood fall to them at 35. Still pretty young, Westwood has excellent defensive skills and is coming into his own at the plate. Westwood shows the skills to become an excellent contact hitter with good on-base capabilities putting him as a potential #2 or #3 in the order. A highly intelligent player who does extensive film study of each pitcher he faces and with time to grow in the Outlaws system gives William a bright future.

Rd 1 - Pick 37 - SP Kyle McKinley - As usual, there is always an early run on pitchers in the BBA drafts and this year was no different. Luckily this draft was stocked with an abundance of quality arms. One such arm was grabbed by the Outlaws at 37 with the selection of SP Kyle McKinley. The tall righty from Omaha, NE has the frame you are looking for from a potential ML starter. He has an classic over-the-top delivery which is clean and repeatable but tries to be a little too cute with his 6 pitch repertoire. The Outlaws will assuredly try to convince McKinley to abandon one, or maybe two, of his weaker offerings and concentrate on making his top 4 devastating. His HS coaches raved about his work ethic and scouts beamed about his workouts and interviews. A steal at 37?

Rd 2 - Pick 72 - CF Johnny Allen - The Outlaws started their 2nd round program with the selection of CF Johnny Allen. The New Jersey native has all the makings of an elite defensive Centerfielder but will need time to work on his hitting skills. Has nice power for a CF but has developed an unhealthy obsession with the long ball creating some holes in his swing. As with the typical Outlaws draft strategy Allen his young and has plenty of time to work with the staff to correct his flaws and hone his skills.

Rd 2 - Pick 77 - SP Petey Carbone - Carbone is an 18 yr old, power throwing Lefty from Providence, RI. As with most power pitcher, Carbone struggles with his control and gets himself in trouble with the free pass. The hard thrower has been able to dominate lower class competition and will work exclusively with the Outlaws Minor League Pitching Instructor, Nelson Ramirez, during the first few years in the system.

Rd 2 - Pick 86 - SP Marcos Rivas - Another Southpaw, Rivas is an advanced 18 yr old that looks much closer to the majors than many. He offers a 4 pitch mix with a nasty Forkball being his main out pitch. More of a "crafty" pitcher with the ability to hit his spots but will never "blow anyone away", there are some in the organization that feel he will end up as a super bullpen arm.

Rd 2 - Pick 89 - CF Bobby Manc - After the selection of Allen, the Outlaws decided to pick another CF and found themselves with CF Bobby Manc inexplicably still sitting on the board. It took roughly 4 seconds for GM Calvaruso to send the card to the podium with Manc's name on it. Some scouts had him rated higher on the board than Allen but was a bit of an unknown coming out of Italy. Manc offers blazing speed to go with his vacuum like abilities in Center, and shows promising skills with the bat. At only 18 yrs old there is plenty of time for him to grow and become the dangerous weapon that some scouts think he will become.

Rd 3 - Pick 113 - SP Travis Wright - The Outlaws went all pitching in the 3rd round and started things off with the selection of their first College player, SP Travis Wright. Already fairly advanced, Wright should hit the ground running in Double AA to start his professional career. Highly Intelligent and a 4 yr Team Captain with excellent leadership abilities, Wright may be on the fast track to the majors and will probably the first player from this draft to make his debut. A solid 4 pitch mix with a Bugs Bunny-esque Changeup that just seems to be going 1MPH, Wright dropped to the 3rd round due to his offer of an internship at Google that everyone and his brother has been telling him to accept. Unfortunately for them, Wright has a passion for baseball that must be explored, and fortunately for the Outlaws he was till waiting by the phone at pick 113. This pick will go down as the steal of the draft without question.

Rd 3 - Pick 122 - SP Juan Ramirez - The Venezuelan import has a live arm and a personality to match. A true flamethrower, hitting the radar gun at 98 mph, Ramirez has struggled through some minor injuries this season and many scouts believed he would eventually throw his arm out with the violent nature in which he pitches which suppressed his draft stock. Ramirez passed all his physicals at only 19 yrs old has time to harness his great arm. His coaches have lauded his ability to take instruction and feel very confident that he will eventually see time in the bigs.

Rd 3 - Pick 130 - SP Howard Sims - The final selection of the round was Howard "Snake Eyes" Sims. This power lefty hails from Country Club, FL. Other than his nickname, he is rather non-descript which is good or bad. He shows an excellent fastball but very suspect control. Sims would appear to slot in a Long Reliever role the majors with a chance for the occasional start. An easy going guy that doesn't make any waves, Sims is more potential at this point with the chance for more if the cards fall right.

It will be very interesting to watch these guys progress and grow during their careers and should provide for some wonderful conversations.
