The Outlaw Chronicles 2045-6 Champion vs Champion, A Comparison

Champion vs Champion, A Comparison

It was suggested by a prominent GM (Ron) that a comparison of the 2044 Champions and the 2015 Champions would be a good read so here it goes.

The 2015 Championship was with the Birmingham Bandits. I had taken over the team from GM Aaron Weiner for the 2005 season (May 2012 real time) and finished the season 76-86. This was my very first playing OOTP and had a huge learning curve. I was fortunate that Aaron left me some very good pieces to start my journey with. I had 3B Ashton Fontenot, LF Chris Neal, C Gustavo Maldonado and an All Star Closer in Darrell Dowdle. He was also gracious enough to leave me some guy named Dexter Sheehan in the minors that ended up with a fairly good career. My first year at the helm was, as explained earlier, was below average but I was able to get into the positive column the next year (2006) with an 87-75, 1st place division record. This was made, in no small part, possible by the promotion of that guy called Sheehan. This also led to my first playoff appearance which went as you would expect for my first time, I finished way to quickly.

This brings us to 10 years of bad luck, bad choices, and bad injuries, but in 2015 everything fell into perfect place. The team had been built for offense and boy did it ever produce. Some of the most prolific hitters in the annals of the BBA. The team finished 95-67 which was only good for second in the division, but they came alive in the playoffs.

The team was led by future HOF C Dexter Sheehan, but he had some spectacular supporting cast. This team was littered with All Stars and overall bad ass batters.

CF Kal El [ .339 BA, 187 Hits, 21 Doubles, 29 HR’s, 112 Runs, 113 RBI’s, 44 SB’s, .396 OBP, 7.0 WAR]
SS Michael Gamble [ .309 BA, 189 Hits, 25 Doubles, 19 Triples, 11 HR’s, 95 Runs, 79 RBI’s, 23 SB, .364 OBP, 4.1 WAR]
C Peter McClure [ .315 BA, 187 Hits, 50 Doubles, 18 HR’s, 93 Runs, 97 RBI’s, .392 OBP, 6.0 WAR]
LF Freddie Rigsby [ .358 BA, 231 Hits, 48 Doubles, 9 Triples, 17 HR’s, 145 Runs, 90 RBI’s, .463 OBP, 8.2 WAR]
DH Dexter Sheehan [ .273 BA, 147 Hits, 15 Doubles, 1 Triple, 33 HR’s, 93 Runs, 111 RBI’s, .361 OBP, 2.0 WAR]
RF Ivan Silva [ .303 BA, 177 Hits, 28 Doubles, 2 Triples, 14 HR’s, 98 Runs, 95 RBI’s, .385 OBP, 1.9 WAR]
3B Jim Johnson [.269 BA, 147 Hits, 26 Doubles, 4 Triples, 21 HR’s, 81 Runs, 90 RBI’s, .321 OBP, 4.3 WAR]
2B Lorenzo Villareal [.259 BA, 78 Hits, 13 Doubles, 3 Triples, 9 HR’s, 42 Runs, 52 RBI’s, .289 OBP, 1.1 WAR]
John Francis "Trapper John" McIntyre [.249 BA, 86 Hits, 24 Doubles, 46 Runs, 53 RBI’s, .335 OBP 0.5 WAR]

The team scored 955 Runs and hit 179 HR’s with a total team WAR of 36.1 for the batter. When I tell you we would club people into submission, we would club people into submission. The team allowed 796 Runs to opposing Teams.

The Pitching staff was adequate, better than average but not special throughout.

SP Mario Pagan [16-4, 194.2 IP, 120 K’s, 3.56 ERA, 2.7 WAR]
SP Robert Shaffer [13-9, 210.2 IP, 124 K’s, 4.10 ERA, 3.8 WAR]
SP Paul O'Scullan [11-9, 204.2 IP, 196 K’s, 4.18 ERA, 4.2 WAR]
SP John Ballance [13-7, 175 IP, 122 K’s, 4.42 ERA, 2.4 WAR]
SP Mike Quinn [12-7, 188.2 IP, 118 K’s, 5.01 ERA, 2.2 WAR]
CL Jose Bermudez [34 Svs, 68 IP, 57 K’s, 3.18 ERA, 0.1 WAR]

The team plowed through the playoffs and finished their season with a 4-0 sweep in the Landis over perennial power Louisville Sluggers. It was a magical season and one that you all now know would not be repeated again for 19 years. I had to many contracts coming due and started a mini teardown. Went to the playoffs again in 2016 but was booted out in the first round. In between 2016 and 2044, we made 5 playoff appearances with another Landis Championship chance in 2025, but we were totally outclassed and were rebuffed in 6 games by the Hawaii Tropics.

This brings us to the present-day San Antonio Outlaws. The Birmingham Bandits were relocated to San Antonio prior to the 2030 season. A squabble between Walter Sobchak and the City of Birmingham over building a new stadium, and the lure of big money, and a bigger media market, from the metropolis is San Antonio pushed Sobchak to move the team.
One thing you can say about the Outlaws, they were a complete team. We had some true mashers in the lineup and some superstars on the mound. It also helped that we were an excellent defense team. This team scored 799 Runs and hit 245 HR’s and allowed 664 Runs.

With the 2044 Landis fresh in everyone’s mind, it does little to go over the power that San Antonio possessed throughout the team but here it goes anyway.

SS Chip Puckett [.256 BA, 150 Hits, 22 Doubles, 6 Triples, 11 HR’s, 84 Runs, 48 RBI’s, 40 SB’s, .318 OBP, 2.7 WAR]
LF Valentin Fitas [.286 BA, 150 Hits, 41 Doubles, 16 HR’s, 61 Runs, 78 RBI’s, .326 OBP, 1.3 WAR ]
1B Larry Stinson [.281 BA, 173 Hits, 36 Doubles, 49 HR’s, 101 Runs, 114 RBI’s, .337 OBP, 5.4 WAR]
RF Pedro Bustamante [.292 BA, 163 Hits, 31 Doubles, 37 HR’s, 86 Runs, 93 RBI’s, .345 OBP, 3.9 WAR]
3B Alfredo Rosas [.305 BA, 155 Hits, 38 Doubles, 5 Triples, 26 HR’s, 77 Runs, 77 RBI’s, .366 OBP, 5.0 WAR]
C Octavio Moreno [.258 BA, 127 Hits, 25 Doubles, 29 HR’s, 64 Runs, 74 RBI’s, .295 OBP, 2.8 WAR]
2B Tu-fu Yong [.240 BA, 125 Hits, 23 Doubles, 30 HR’s, 73 Runs, 72 RBI’s, .301 OBP, 1.5 WAR]
CF Mennac Shakes [.246 BA, 97 Hits, 24 Doubles, 8 HR’s, 56 Runs, 44 RBI’s, 22 SB’s, .303 OBP, 0.9 WAR]
OF Tony Vega [.285 BA, 65 Hits, 13 Doubles, 17 HR’s, 43 Runs, 42 RBI’s, .357 OBP, 1.8 WAR]
IF Mario Deortez [.259 BA, 60 Hits, 9 Doubles, 10 HR’s, 30 Runs, 24 RBI’s, .350 OBP, 0.3 WAR
DH Lucio Cuellar [.251 BA, 87 Hits, 20 Doubles, 5 HR’s, 47 Runs, 38 RBI’s, 33 SB’s, .313 OBP, 0.2 WAR]

But the pitching, good grief the pitching

SP Ricardo Rivera [16-4, 191 IP, 171 K’s, 2.73 ERA, 6.8 WAR] (and an 0.8 ERA in the playoffs)
SP Ruben Vazquez [14-13, 185 IP, 230 K’s, 4.14 ERA, 4.8 WAR]
SP Julio Alicea [14-12, 185 IP, 135 K’s, 4.72 ERA, 2.2 WAR]
SP Francisco Cardona [15-7, 196.2 IP, 3.16 ERA, 3.3 WAR]
SP Luis Pasillas [10-12, 152.1 IP, 143 K’s, 4.67 ERA, 0.8 WAR]
CL Augate Balun [25 Saves, 49 IP, 46 K’s, 2.39 ERA, 1.4 WAR]
CL Luis Pina [19 Saves, 53.1 IP, 58 K’s, 3.21 ERA, 0.9 WAR]

Just the quick glance shows while the 2044 team was no slouch in the hitting department, but the 2015 team was stacked and truly brutalized opposing pitching staffs, while the 2015 pitching was ok, it was not in the same hemisphere as the 2044 staff.

So we have to championships won in vastly different styles, but wins they were and GM Calvaruso now has 2 trophies proudly displayed at the team headquarters.

That's an awesome comparison. Way to do it by adapting.

I am glad Ron recommended doing this, it was fun and a great chance to reminisce.
