Outlaws Wrap Up Round 1

Blessed to have three picks in the 2044 Amateur draft, the San Antonio Outlaws went pitching heavy taking starting pitchers with all three picks.

Pick #1, #11 overall, SP Jed Flores. The 21 yr old righty from Williston , VT is already fairly developed at this stage. A power pitcher with a 3/4 arm slot, Flores boast a Fastball, Slider, CU selection and can bring the heat at 99 mph. He tends to generate alot of ground balls and has charted in the upper ranks of spin rate. While he may not be an Ace, he will definitely be a ML pitcher with a ceiling of #2 or #3 depending on growth.

#2, #31 overall, SP Jeff Doane. Doane was actually rated as the 5th best prospect coming into this draft, but an untimely arm injury saw his stock drop faster than Monica Lewinsky to her knees. GM Calvaruso and the Outlaws medical staff sat down with Dr. James Andrews, poured over his medicals and determined that he should have no problems coming back from the elbow surgery. He is a strong kid, and has room to grow at only 18 yrs old. He had a 4 pitch arsenal, FB, CV, CU, SL and routinely hit in the 95 mph range before the injury. The Outlaws will need to have a little patience with Doane, but this may end up as a steal this late in the draft.

#3, #44 Overall, SP Joaquin Martinez. Because everyone needs a Lefty starter right? Martinez is your classic, crafty southpaw that seems to be a groundball machine. A little old at 22, but has shown incredible Work Ethic and should be a mainstay for the back half of the rotation at some point in his career. A year of strength training and refinement in his delivery could do wonders for his overall growth.

Round 2 should be just as exciting as the Outlaws also have three picks in the round. Would have been nice had the draft not been so top heavy.

Going to be interesting to see how these guys develop.I kinda like the idea of focusing on arms and seeing what happens.
