One Goes Down, Another Steps Up

Injuries are a part of the game, if you don't believe me just ask San Antonio Outlaws GM Mike Calvaruso, and there is really nothing you can do to stop them. But what any GM, or manager, hopes for is that when guys go down there is someone behind them ready to step up, well that happened for the Outlaws this last sim.

Second game of the Sim, starting SS Chip Puckett went down after a collision at first base, tweaking his back, and was forced to sit out the rest of the sim while he gets some therapy. In steps backup SS Bob Allen, and boy did he ever step up.

The Rule 5 pickup performed admirably in Puckett's place, and really outperformed what anyone in the organization could have expected from the Rookie. Allen picked up 16 AB's and gave the Outlaws faithful a glimpse of his capabilities with 9 Hits, 1 HR and 3 RBI's for a .563 BA to go with his 1.329 OPS. He also displayed his Hoover like hands as he gave the team perfect defense from the infield generals spot.

His biggest bright spot of the week came on the June 19th contest against the Atlantic City Gamblers when he went 3-3 with 2 RBI's and 2 Runs scored, and being named the Player of the Game pushing the Outlaws to a 6-4 Win..

These are the things that can push a good team into becoming a great team and the importance of having quality, competent backup's can never be understated.

I love the smell of successful Rule 5 pick-ups in the morning. Especially those from Yellow Springs.

Not surprising that a YS9 rule 5 guy would carry a Johnson League team.
