Outlaws Assign Five to Minors

With the Spring schedule hitting the half way point, the San Antonio Outlaws took the opportunity to thin out the ranks in preparation for making some final decisions. Five players were reassigned to their minor league camps, having left with a taste of what spring training is like and a hope that they will be back there next year.

C Jesus Garcia: Garcia came to San Antonio in August of last year in the Roberto Lizardo trade. The 22 year old showed his abilities behind the dish but struggled at the plate in his first spring action. The signing of veteran Dan Calhoun gave the Outlaws the opportunity to get Garcia some more seasoning in AAA.

DH Luis Valdes: It's always going to be difficult to keep a full time DH on the squad unless they just tear the cover off the ball at every swing. Valdes does not do this. If injuries hit the big club he could be back in San Antonio but there are a ton of people that hope it doesn't happen.

RF Pedro Hernandez: Hernandez is starting to get long in the tooth for a minor leaguer and some in the organization feel that Hernandez time has come and gone. Unless he gets a nice bump in Contact soon, it appears he is headed for the dreaded "organizational depth" label.

RP Jorge Ayala: The 22 year old struggled mightily in camp this spring, owning a 13.50 ERA in 9 innings pitched. Still young enough to grow and make a splash later in the year.

SP Luis Pasillas: This is one the brass really wanted to take control of a roster spot this spring, it just didn't happen. He is in danger of missing his window of opportunity and there is silent prayers that he figures it out and takes the next steps this year in Austin.

With 35 players still n the Spring roster, at least 8 more moves will be coming in the next few weeks as everyone gets down to their 27 limit.
