The Outlaw Chronicles 2042-3 Outlaws Trade for SS

Outlaws Trade for Shortstop

The San Antonio Outlaws made upgrading their Shortstop position a priority during the offseason, and with a meager selection in the free agent arena the Outlaws decided to saturate the team with quantity in the hopes of finding a diamond in the rough.

Last week the Outlaws plucked three infielders from the Rule 5 draft giving them a total of 5 on the 40 man roster. Yet meetings between management and the coaching staff brought to light the continued concern that they still did not have a true ML starting option available to them. All of that changed with the stoke of a pen last night as GM Calvaruso signed off on a trade bringing BBA veteran Shortstop Chip Puckett to San Antonio.

The addition of Puckett immediately changes the makeup of the Outlaws lineup and brings a true veteran star to the most important position in the infield. Now with the expected starter written down in ink, it becomes time to look for his backup and any other players that can solidify the infield bench roles. The Outlaws will have some decisions to make come cut down time but we can still speculate on what may happen.

Miguel Padilla: Padilla came into last year as the new starter at SS replacing Pedro Suarez, but a couple of times on the IL, a total of 11 weeks, really curtailed his production. Not to mention he was not a very good defensive SS finishing the year with a rough -4.6 ZR. Padilla is really more of a 2B and will now have to battle for a backup spot.

Tony Gustafsen: Gustafsen was signed back in December to come in and give Padilla some competition for the SS spot, with the hopes that the slick fielding veteran would take control of the spot during the spring and upgrade it from Padilla's terrible -4.6 defensive ZR rating. Gustafsen is now being looked at as the #1 backup option at SS, but he has some stiff competition in the young guys.

Bob Allen: Allen was a rule 5 pick from the Yellow Springs Nine organization and really has management excited to see what he can do. A true Leader who has been the Captain of every minor league team he has been on, Allen brings the defensive chops to start in the ML now, but needs to wait for his bat to catch up. He will be given every opportunity to win a bench role our of spring since he really looks like that diamond in the rough they have been searching for.

Juan Domingo: Domingo is a former 1st round draft pick of the Rockville Pikemen back in 2037. Another solid looking defensive SS, he has been considered one of the steadiest player sin the Pikemen organization for years now. The 22 year old Honduran still has room to grow with his bat but is definitely in the mix for the infield bench role, especially since he could play any position with ease.

Jose Gonzales: Gonzales was a scouting find from Venezuela back in 3026 and has shown a ton of promise so far. A true SS with some of the most beautiful glovework in all the minor leagues, his comparisons to fellow Venezuelan Omar Vizquel should tell you all you need to know about his defense. Question remain as to just how much Gonzales will grow as an offensive threat but at 22 he still has a little time to make adjustments.

One thing is for sure, it will be a merry-go-round in Outlaws spring camp.

His profile photo looked like he swallow a lump of coal.

One again, great trade for both teams.

Nice pickup with Puckett! The Spring Training scramble should be fun to watch, with three infield hopefuls and a stack of bituminous … or is Allen more an anthracite kinda guy?

Puckett is a solid pickup, but maybe a bit overpriced.
