The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Well, you would think that not much has been good in a crappy season like the Outlaws are having, but there is some positives coming out of another ruined year so let’s have a look shall we

THE GOOD

3B Lucio Cuellar. Recently signed to a 3-year extension, Cuellar has been a godsend at the top of the lineup. Currently having a career best year, he is hitting a robust .334 with a .368 OBP. He has scored 103 Runs and driven in 57 all the while acting like a terror on the base paths with 62 swipes. Fielding could use a little work, but it is hard to be disappointed in the guy.

LF Valentin Fritas. Another recent extension signee, Fritas is also in the midst of a career year. Batting .323 with a .539 Slugging and .385 OBP he has become the perfect 3-hole hitter for San Antonio. Sitting at 17 HR’s and knocking on the door of 100 RBI’s, Fritas is still only 21 years old. This is someone who will be a driving force in the Outlaws lineup for many years.

CF Mennac Shakes. Expected to play the year in AAA thanks to the signing of Abdelwahab Kamade, Shakes forced his way onto the opening day roster and eventually took over CF duties. He has quietly had a solid rookie season hitting .265 with 50 Runs, 44 RBI’s and pretty solid defense. At only 20 year sold there is a lot of room for a bump or two, but he has been more than capable so far. Even though he has superb speed He had a tough year on the basepaths and will be working with the baserunning coach over the Winter to get a better jump.

1B Tony Hernandez. He hasn’t had a great season compared to his standards, but he has been solid. Sitting at .272 BA with a .464 Slugging, Hernandez has been a little off this year. He will finish below his last two seasons HR and RBI stats and seemed to really struggle with the crappy season. With Rookie Larry Stinson knocking on the door, Hernandez could be a trade candidate this offseason.

OF Abdelwahab Kamade. The aforementioned OF was a spring signing with the intention of being the CF for the year, but with the emergence of Shakes and the fall of regular RF Mark White, he moved to RF for most of the year and supplied a good year for the Outlaws. Batting .291 with a .358 OBP, he chipped in 60 RBI’s, 90 Runs and 26 SB’s. With a Team Option for 2042 it looks good for Kamade being an Outlaw come next year.

1B Jose Estrada. Signed to give the Outlaws some power in the lineup and he did not disappoint. He is sitting at 30 HR’s and 83 RBI’s and a .289 BA, he has been a great addition to the team. Unfortunately, he cannot do it all and will probably leave after this year and revisit Free Agency.

With every good story, there were three bad ones this year for San Antonio. Let’s see who struggled this year

THE BAD

SP Aki Kondo. Good Grief! Where do we start, Highest ERA in his career, Highest WHIP, most HR’s/9, Most BB’s/9, Lowest K’s/9. A BABIP of .355. This season has been an absolute DISASTER! Let’s hope he has not hit the wall in his career.

SP Yrriga Carpenter. Carpenter has never been able to repeat his Nebraska year of 2038, but was having a decent 2041 until he was hit with his second career Elbow Ligament Surgery. It will remain to be seen how he will return after this second one, but he was a big investment for San Antonio at the time. With good pitching a premium in the league it will really sting if he falls off the table after this.

SP Ricardo Rivera. San Antonio’s Super Rookie was trudging along in his inaugural season before he was hit with a Partially Torn Labrum and went on the shelf for 5 months. This could be a blessing in disguise, who know but we are hoping he returns stronger for 2042 as it looks like he is ready to take over as the Ace of the staff.

2B Quint Coppard. Coppard is on the bad list for one reason, defense. He has hit fairly well with a .276 BA with a .322 OBP, 69 RBI’s, and 62 Runs for the year, But he has hands of stone. Not sure what I can do to get his defense better or should I just look somewhere else for next year.

C Octavio Moreno. Talk about a Sophomore Slump. Moreno gave the Outlaws a solid Rookie season, but he has really struggled this year. He is sitting at .225 BA with a .260 OBP and even struggled defensively. He is still only 20 years old and has tons of room to grow, he will be asked to stay in San Antonio over the Winter to work with Outlaws roving coach Dexter Sheehan on his skills.

This section may take up 7 pages so we will just hold it to the a minimum.

THE UGLY

Starting Pitching. What a dumpster fire. A Team Starters ERA of 6.40, not gonna win many games with that. We just plain sucked on the mound. Lot of work to do.

Relief Pitching. Just as bad. A move to make Ramon Sanchez the Closer of the future blew up in the Outlaws face and the rest of the pen has risen to a beautiful 5.22 ERA, last in the league.

Defense. What the F*&$. 14th in Errors and 13th in Zone Rating. Coaches a just stupefied as to what needs to change.

SS. This has been a position of need for many years in San Antonio. Pedro Suarez has been an adequate stopgap mainly due to his defense, but he has been almost a black hole of offensive production. Definitely a position of upgrade over the Winter.

It will be a Winter of discontent in San Antonio as the entire organization needs to look internally and ask themselves if they are doing the right thing. A lot of sleepless nights on the horizon.
