The Outlaw Chronicles 2039-5 Outlaws Sign Picks

Amateur Draftees Sign

San Antonio GM Mike Calvaruso was a busy man this last week as he and his team came to terms with their top 6 amateur draftees.

First round pick, SP Ernie Allen, signed a $1.76m bonus with the club. The southpaw from Pine Bluff, AR comes in with an incredible resume. More of a crafty pitcher than a true fireballer, Allen offers a 4 pitch mix (Fastball, Change up, Splitter & Forkball) and currently tops out at 94 mph. Allen was assigned to Rookie League Waco Thunder but is expected to rise through the Outlaws system rapidly. Allen debuts as the #2 ranked prospect in the Outlaws system.

Second round pick, Powerhouse RF Wayne Morris, gave his John Hancock for a bonus of $1.5m. The youngster from South Hill, WA has the build and tools to become a classic corner outfield thumper without the swing and miss aspect that usually follow most power hitters. Wayne Morris makes his Outlaws debut as the #4 ranked prospect in their minor league system. Morris was assigned to Rookie League Waco Thunder

The Outlaws had 2 third round picks this year and used the first one, pick 96, to go after SS Rodger Gonzalez. Gonzalez received a $330,000 signing bonus and decided to bypass college to begin his pro career. There are considerable internal discussion as to which will be Gonzalez best position as he not only grades out as an exceptional SS, but is also being considered for a move to CF where he also brings fantastic defense. A groundball spray hitter, Gonzalez is thought to be a future top of the order OBP machine. Gonzalez has been assigned to Rookie League Waco Thunder.
(Update: Gonzales has been told to dust off his OF glove and will begin his rookie season in CF)

Pick 102, the Outlaws second pick in the third round, went to 3B Ron Paull out of Covington, KY. Paul has a solid glove for the hot corner and has the frame to add muscle as he continues to grow. Most analyst think he has the tools to stay at 3B as he reaches the major league level. Paul is considered the #8 ranked prospect for the Outlaws. Paul signed for $300,000 and has been assigned to Rookie League Waco Thunder.

The Outlaws used their fourth round spot to select 1B Jose Sanchez. This pick was considered quite the steal as Sanchez had been predicted to be selected in the second round by most experts. Sanchez has an advanced approach at the plate and adequate enough glove skills to stay at First base. Not very fleet of foot, it would not be out of the realm of possibility that he ends up as a DH. Sanchez received a $210,000 bonus and has been assigned to Rookie League Waco Thunder.

Round Five saw the Outlaws go for more strength up the middle as they selected CF Marshall Williams. The Houston, TX native is a work in progress at the plate, and will spend many late hours working with the Outlaws roaving hitting instructors, but was drafted mainly for his defense. Williams signed on the dotted line for a $150,000 bonus and has been assigned to Rookei League Waco Thunder.

I kind of like Gonzales in center.

He obviously has the defensive skills to succeed in CF, but with the high adaptability in his profile I thought it would be a good risk to try
